TTTSNB (The Thing That Should Not Be)

World would be better off without spiders. I'm sure another less horrifying bug would eat the insects instead.

I admit to suffering with arachnophobia, but I would never want spiders to go away. The thought of the increase in population of other insects which really annoy me like flies and mosquitoes is horrifying.

Movies about killer spiders is what causes people to fear them. If you see one up close or watch someone handle it, it is quite obvious that there is nothing to be afraid of. I understand the fear because it has the possibility to bite, but you have a better chance of being bitten by a dog (no kidding) than a tarantula. Like I said before, their first instinct is to run, not bite.

Clever. But Clotho would have been better.

True, but I didn't like the way it sounded as much.

Picture!

Nice looking spider. I'm in the process of getting one of those right now. What do you feed them when they are around 1"? I doubt they could take on a full-size cricket, so should I go with worms?

You can pretty much feed them whatever - I've mostly gone with crickets, as you can get them pretty small.

The funny thing is that I am not afraid of them biting me and I have yet to watch a movie where they are depicted as monsters. It has something to do with the way they look and how they move. It also depends on the spider too. I find wolf spiders to be really scary, but tarantulas don't bother me much.

Wolf spiders kinda creep me out too, but not that bad. I'd never hold one though.

I am having a really hard time deciding on a name.

I've found a lot of people dislike the way spiders move. However, if you know WHY they move that way, it's not so bad.

Spiders only can control the first few joints in their legs with muscles. All the joints past that are controlled by pressurizing the fluid in the legs. Think of it like inflating a balloon - more pressure extends the leg, less pressure retracts the leg.

So, watch a spider walk, but keep in mind the process behind making each leg move. Much less scary now, isn't it?

EDIT: This is also why when a spider dies, its legs curl underneath it. No pressure to keep them out straight!

Okay, normally I like looking at pictures of spiders but they generally creep me the hell out. Yours, though, is cute. You said that she's fast, but she looked cute and tentative. And I love her little pink toes.

I like the name Lola.

That made me sad. I didn't know that was why.

No, by definition phobias are irrational.

I've contemplated naming her Syringer...she would be the representative for all YAGTs.

Hilarious.

Watching a brady bunch episode when I was around three years made me afraid of tarantulas and Hawaii for a very long time. A tarantula crawled on someone while they were sleeping during their Hawaii vacation.
