Help me in choosing a 550W+ Quiet Power Supply for +-$100

Hey guys,

I have the system in sig, currently it is powered by HEC Orion 585D (585W) which is working fine but is damn noisy.

1. The power supply should be near silent as the rest of my system is very silent, AC Freezer 64 Pro, Accelero X2, Antec Silent 80mm, 120mm.

2. Also it needs to provide max protection to my hardware which I can't afford to replace (especially to the extent of my current config).

3. I don't want to change the power supply for at least 1-2 years, which means it should be able to handle a single G80/R600, whenever they come out.

I'm willing to over slightly over my budget if it goes towards some sort of future proofing. But I might add that I'm looking for the most bang for my buck provided the above 3 conditions are met.

Thanks a lot for the help

Ashish

EDIT: I still want a PS with a Fan, not the fanless ones, a quiet 120mm PS.

Yeah I was just looking at the Seasonic S12. If anybody else knows of any more good ones please suggest it to me. Having more options to study and choose from is always better.

Thanks

Ashish

I like Zippy, Seasonic, Enhance/Silverstone, non-Antec ChannelWell, iStar and PCP&C. The Zippy gaming versions have cleaner air flow, and thermally controlled fans over the server versions. Hard to find here, but when you order, you can ask for the gaming version of the model and you'll get one with the same features but it won't be black or sleeved.

Don't obsess too much over noise - there is a balance to be struck between low noise and self-preservation of your PSU (besides which, the cooler the PSU runs, the more power than can be supplied at any given time. Don't expect the PSU fan to participate much in overall system cooling - the case fans need to be able to take care of that and supplying reasonably cool air to the intake of the PSU as well. That is by far the best way to keep the PSU noise down - keep its intake air temp down so the fan(s) don't ever have an excuse to ramp up.
. Some cases isolate the PSU intake air (bottom PSU on Stacker, Aerocool CoolView/Masstige/Bay Dream, etc. On cases like those, the PSU fan will almost never go above idle.

I finally settled for OCZ GameXStream 700W after reading several reviews. 4 x 12V rails, Active PFC, All sorts of protection, Very Quiet, X1900 Crossfire Capable. Hopefully this will outlast the rest of my hardware, as so far it sounds pretty future proof to me.

Fanboy site reviews on PSUs are generally not reliable. The GameStream 700 is (for all practical purposes) the same as the Fortron Epsilon 700. Check JonnyGuru's review of the Epsilon for the problems he discovered. But JG's reviews are to be take w/ a grain of salt too as he doesn't disclose that he is or has recently been in the emplay of Ultra Products and/or Tiger Direct (both of which are shady, IMO). Anyway, check around some sites that test PSUs properly. Tom's comes close, one Brit site does a decent job (perhaps LegitReviews) for some Epsilon reviews. If you really need that much power, check out the Enhance ENS-0560G at ewiz.com - 99.50 via Froogle (many items are cheaper at eWiz if you go there via Froogle than if you go direct to the eWiz site).

In particular, check http://www.jonnyguru.com and his test of the Epsilon 600 and OCZ-700 in re. to the ripple problem. Ripple on these PSUs is bad enough to cause your mobo to go south under a heavy gaming load. And definitely not within spec.

If it was me, I'd probably use an Enhance ENP-5140GH or -5150GH for the main PSU and if I needed more power I'd add another PSU rather than buying one large PSU. 800 W at under $120. and 1000 W at under $140. is hard to beat. These PSUs don't look pretty but function amazingly well. Either of them could handle more than 90% of the ATX systems made in the last 6 months. Add another and most of the remaining 10% of ATX systems are covered. Function over form any day!

If the OP was running off a HEC Orion 585W, then the Enhance should be great! the 5150GH will power SLI/Crossfire. These two units should also be reasonably quiet compared to the HEC. I purchased two of those HECs from Mwave (or wherever had the deal) and know that it is fairly noisy.

IMHO, given your criteria, what you need is a Sunbeam NUUO 550... 😉

80+ certified psu's will be quieter becasue they are more efficiant, thus produce less heat, thus need less rpm's on the fan, thus are quieter. Enhance, fortron, seasonic, silverstone and topower have 80+ certified units. Hiper is 2nd tier quality, even though they have some good deals, check out jonnyguru.com for his review. I don't think you need more than a 400w psu like an enhance 5140gh or something, unless you think you'll be upgrading to an sli system in the near future. Good luck!😀

Thats what most geeks that don't know much about PSUs will say...... that or PC P&C.

This coming from someone who uses an Ultra PSU?

Seasonic

What is wrong with Ultra? You probably don't even know who their OEM is....

It's wintech.

DBtelos PCP&C reccomendations are "noobish" I guess especially if a person says $100 budget however Seasonic is quite a good brand and it is definetely not a "noob" thing to say.

Anyone saying the corsair units, the antec trio units, and NeoHE, Silencer series, etc. would all be noobs then.

I know Seasonic is quality stuff, probably one of the best. But, generally, people that don't know much about PSUs know about a couple brands that are really good. PC P&C, Seasonic, and sometimes one or two others. So, everytime a PSU thread comes up, most people are getting a Seasonic or PC P&C recommendation. Ever see a Etasis PSU get recommended, Enhance, Liteon, Zippy, Masscool???

And yes, it is Wintech 😀

umm if the budget allowed a PC and Cooling PSU, you wouldnt recomend it? Or even a Seasonic, your telling me you still wouldnt recomend it? How are these choices noobish? then fine your giving out noobish choices to people asking noobish questions so therefore it should all be balanced and faired out no?

Also how can something that be such top notich in quality and performance be noobish? Thats like telling a person go buy a CAMRY, oh wait, thats a noobish car choice because everyone will recomend that car in aspect of reliablity and resale.
