I'm starting a new PC build soon and I plan on painting the case to match the distinctive cream and brown shades that Noctua uses for most of their fans (I like to think if it as coffee and cream, or white chocolate and milk chocolate... Mmm). Either spray paint or paint for an airbrush would work, though I've never gotten perfect, even results with spraypaint without a lot of work sanding between multiple coats, so I'm leaning towards airbrush.

I'm not sure if it would be worth color matching through a brick and mortar store or online versus just buying the closest match off the shelf... but in any case, I could use some recommendations, because I want paint that will fare well over time and won't scratch if I look at it funny (which I guess is more up to the clear coat than base).

Any paint gurus here?

I've used Rustoleum rattle cans to re-paint a couple Rock Band guitars, and it's held up remarkably well given that they aren't exactly treated gingerly.

Spray paint might be the best bet for metal, but I've had good luck using standard primer and then brushing on standard paint just like you would for wood. So that may open your options if you go that route as there's millions of colors to choose from at a paint store. I went with Benjamin Moore.

The rack on the left of the PDUs used to be beige. It even ended up with a nice shine to it. It does kinda scratch easily though, like if I used the tip of a screw driver I probably could scratch it. But guess the same can be said for a car. There might be some kind of clear coat you can put to protect it better.

If you go to a auto paint supply house they can make any color you want for $20 a can.

I have painted a motorcycle with nothing more than Home Depot paint. I don't remember the brand, but it was a metallic paint. Expect to do a fair amount of sanding between coats especially after the last clear coat and then you have buff out with rubbing compound, etc.
