If you know people with both types of pistols, or if there is a rental range around there, I definitely recommend trying both out before you buy. The best pistol for one person is not necessarily the best pistol for another.
I have both an H&K USP expert and an older Glock 17 (ex NYC police gun with a new trigger) and it comes down to a matter of personal preference.
You really need to go rent them both and see what works best for you. You also need to realize that the USP series has a much wider range of options such as external safetys, decocker, DAO, etc. The USP also has an integral lock which may also be a consideration for you, especially if you live in a state where that is required.

I don't like Glocks. I just don't. I can't tell you why... they just don't feel good to me. And they're ugly.
I like the H&K USP Compact a lot. My only complaint about H&Ks is they feel a little barrel heavy. I would choose the H&K
Also consider Sig. I'm the proud owner of a 220, a 226, a 228 and a 238. Beautiful guns, and among the best made in the world. The standard for international law enforcement.

Go .45 instead. Colt 1911 - they can be had cheaply, and were the standard US Military sidearm from 1911 until... Like 1990, when Colt dropped the 1911 and went into production with the 1991 (Though the 1911 is back in production as a WW1 throwback model right now - these look REALLY slick, not sure on pricetag). The military then switched to the Berretta 92. That, and they look REALLY cool.

Don't let these noobs turn you against the 9mm. The 9mm pistols we have today are wondernines! They have 15 round magazines and P+ ammunition. They can generate huge amounts of impact energy, nearly to the level of a .45.
A 9mm will kill someone just as sure as a .45. Just make sure you shoot them in the right place, because neither one will help you if you miss.

As long as your hands are a little over average size, you can handle a 45ACP with a 13 round magazine, which makes the quantity advantage of a 9mm almost go away. And the quality advantage of the 45 is still there.
IIRC the FBI agents in the Miami shoot-out that led to the FBI ditching the 9x19 were using +P rounds
If you absolutely have to use a 9mm, use a 9x23mm. Of course, that wipes the 9x19's advantages of cheapness and availability, but if you want a 9mm that will perform close to or at 45 levels, thats what to get (in pistol rounds)

The H&K P2000 is a hell of a gun. I really want to get one but just don't have the cash. It is right around $700 depending on which model you get. I love the LEM trigger.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have personally fired a couple of firearms, and I don't like the Berreta because it's a little larger for my hands (and too much military in it). I think I will go with the H&K USP23.

Eh. I wouldn't bet my life on a nine killing an invader. In order to get me to operate a convenience store, you'd have to give me a .50 or a 12 gauge - somthing with some frickin stopping power.

), and I wasn't gonna shoot any one, unless I absolutely have to. I just want to detain the bastages and hand them over. As for stopping power, trust, me, 10 9mm slugs will stop any body.Another vote for going to the shooting range and renting what they have to do a comparison. I'd go Glock, get a new model with the finger grooves. I personally like the grip better than the plain older ones. IMO, the H&K are great, but the Glock is a better value.
