I don't get it.. I've heard the Bose complaints and don't own any bose products myself (can't afford them- have infinity towers and AR rears) but if they have the same parts as a $200 boom box then why do they sound so much better? I know that they're over priced but whenever I hear my pal's Bose wave radio I have to admit that it DOES sound good.. The bose surround sound set is a bit tinny but still, not as bad as you guys make it out to be...

we own a condo on the beach together. it is a vacation home for me and my woman, and him and his wife.

he wants to get all this cool stuff for the condo -- he's already getting a 42" plasma for the condo. if i had it my way, i would get somthing else. but i can't complain about that! :) the reason why he wants the plasma is because it looks cool and can hang on the wall. that way we can have more living space. I would get a lcos tv, but that's me.

But he wants Bose because, to him, they look cool and are small and obtrusive. if it was my $$, i would get some super huge quality HT speakers. :)

i told him there were a lot of alternatives taht i can show him. I just need the power of ATOT to help me out.

So if you went out, bought a system and placed it in the home, he wouldn't have any reason to buy a Bose would he.
;)

Newbie: Does anyone have any opinions about Bose speakers?

Five Responses: There are better speakers for the money including brands X, Y, and Z.

Bose Defender: But Bose speakers offer superior design. They're the most popular speaker in the world, and for good reason.

Ten Responses: Popularity does not equal quality. (Many long detailed rebuttals to the Bose defender. Tone tends to be slightly hostile since they've done this several times before. Some are very hostile --- "Bose sucks!!!")

Bose Defender: No. You're all wrong.

Fifteen Responses: What?! (Many more long posts explaining again why they are right)

Bose Defender: (not in response to anything in particular) But Bose is a large corporation with excellent customer service. Other smaller companies may fail, leaving you without service.

Twenty Responses: Good service for a poor quality product? So what? (Many more detailed responses about the problems they perceive with Bose, plus more "Bose sucks!!!" posts)

Bose Defender: Bose is a very popular speaker. More people buy Bose speakers than any other speaker, and Bose has very high customer satisfaction rates.

Twenty-five Responses: Agggh!! We just explained that quality does not equal popularity. Can't you read? Are you an IDIOT?
Bose Defender: No. I'm not the idiot, you're all idiots. This newsgroup is populated by a small clique of crazy "audiophile" types who spend hundreds of dollars for cable that doesn't even make a difference.

Newbie: (forgot about the newbie didn't you!) (in a weak voice) I want my mommy.

Totally agree with this. You may be able to tell the difference between BOSE and other speaker systems, but most people can not and most feel that BOSE is a fairly good product. Let them be happy and let them buy BOSE.

If you can get this while you're young, you'll be a lot better off, believe me.
If you don't want BOSE, YOU don't have to buy them. Try to get him to buy

THESE and you could build them.....
I'm getting some for a client.

MOm has a REAL stereo we picked out years ago, she would want to play a CD and push the tape monitor button and I would have to come over and "fix" it.
She gets a WAVE radio w/ CD player and loves it. Listens to anything now.
Never discount another persons opinion. It might actually matter to them in ways you would not understand.

Hehe, you should insert an appropriate smiley to convey the sarcasm as there seems to be a lot of broken sarcasm meters lately :D

As for the topic, if the relative hasn't taken a real interest in the wonders of objective sound quality for the dollar, chances are they will never be convinced that Bose is really what Bose is ;) Especially not if the relative is over 30 years of age as older folks tend to really shut their minds to new input and fall back on old data (i.e., Bose used to be competitive in price/performance before the 90's form over function strategy so they're riding on their name and trying all the tricks in the book to make ignorant folks drop the dough for those rip off systems). BTW Bose's "bass modules" aren't really subwoofers, rather just a small array of everyday woofers that accentuate at about 80Hz to make listeners who don't know better think they put out quality bass.

All in all, don't waste your time and energy.
AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA Reminds me of a bumpersticker I see that says " Hire a TEENAGER while they still know it all " <Red> DUMBA$$ </RED>
Most of us don't get to this oldage by being good looking, It's because we're SMART and we learn along the way.
LOL @ YOU smug little know-it-alls.

Well - since this guy is purchasing all this fancy stuff, just spring the coin for some in-wall Triads.

if your convince him to buy soemthine else and after its setup he doesnt think it sounds as good as his Bose setup at home..nothing good can come of it.

its his money let him buy what he wants and be happy about it, stop trying to buy what you want with his money
what if you were the one buying an HT system with your money and he kept tryign to convince you bose was the shlt...you wouldnt like that right....

i mean geez he bought a plasma tv that you will be using and enjoying for free and your bitching about it...whats that all about....

I would just let him buy whatever he wants and be a good friend and tell him it sounds good. Better than raining on his parade, especially since he already likes Bose.

why? it is his money and if it is what he wants what do you care?

honestly, so he knows he wants something, he already has a set that he likes...and now you are going to convince him to get something he doesn't really want?

what if he is totally unhappy with your suggestion and regrets it?

I am always amazed at those who feel compelled to try and change people's minds about purchases.....let him do what he wants.

I would normally leave him alone to do his own thing...

but i told him a few nights ago not to get Bose. And he told me that if I could give him valid reasons, find another alternative that is at most the same price, and is the same form factor, he would consider it.

That's why I am asking for your guys' help.

Athena Speakers

Tell him to at least test out the Audition series of Athena speakers... They look beautiful - like the crazy expensive audiophile speakers - and they're less expensive than a Bose surround system. They will absolutely destroy a Bose system. Show your friend some reviews of the Athena speakers in Sound and Vision or Audiophile magazines.

I cannot say enough positive things about the Athena speakers.. I got them for nearly half the suggested cost (can be found on the Internet).

EDIT: BTW.. yea, they're not the same form factor as Bose Systems.. but Bose systems look cheap anyway cause' they're in every living room. Any audiophile knows that you don't buy a speaker because it's small. The Athenas at least look nice and they're the same form factor as super crazy expensive speakers.

Your buddy sounds like the type of guy that would bring his own CD for a listening test into Best Buy that was recorded off a bunch of 128kbps downloaded mp3s. Ya.. the Bose will sound decent if you play them over the phone to your friends.. It's cooler to have an obscure brand that few people know about so they knock it cause' it's not Bose - then blow them away. I do that with my roomate's parents whenever they come over and see our system.

I agree.

The only reasonable way is have him listen to other speaker systems.

Consumer Reports did a test on small stereos a few months ago. There was a better looking (my opinion), better sounding (CR's opinion), and far less costly alternative. I don't have it in front of me though - I'm at school.
