WTF is a GUP?

I've had stuff magically revive after letting it sit. Don't know why, but I was thankful.

Wow that's great. You probably burnt out some resistor since you basically fed power in the reverse direction through the card. Once you get everything working, definitely keep an eye on your temps and voltages.

Side note - there really really isn't any reason for an 8-pin connector. The additional 2 pins are just grounds and the card already has 225w of power available to it. Does it really need 300w? (75w pci-e slot + 75w 6-pin + 150w 8-pin) We're talking a 130w card. Even with just the two 6-pins you could pull 150w. Me thinks there are blue crystals in the 8-pin card.

I would go back to the PSU manufacturer and make them change that lable. Horrible, horrible product design if these are meant to be sold to non-OEMs. That lable needs to be changed, IMO.

The PSU he has is EOL.
Not sure if the other models are labeled the same way though.

OMFG!!!

THE 4890 IS WORKING!

I was just about to pack it up and get it ready to send. I thought ahh worth a try...I put it in expecting the worst and it acted just like it had been before. But then i noticed it sounded different and as i placed my hand slightly closer i could feel... HEAT!

Now either it was about to burst into flames or i am the lucky mother fkr on the planet. It is fully running and running well (i am currently installing the drivers). I was happy before you can imagine how happy i am now :D :D :D :D

TIME TO HIT THE GAMES!

Thanks once again

peace x

I'd still replace it as there is a possibility a few resistors got burned up that could show problems later on or until a specific game taxes that area of a card.

Hi guys,

Ok i am a little worried that some of the 4890's components MAY indeed be damaged. I am running a full folding@home test and hoping it will do fine, I have played HAWX (great game) and that has run fine. I am going to run 3D mark, play crysis for a bit, play gta iv, fallout 3, and oblivion. Keep fingers crossed i dont come across any probs. I he unplugged the card and have had a very good look at all components and all seems well.

Themps are 40c at idle (which i am happy about) and under full load folding@home get 77c max - 72c average. So all seems well there.

However there is a small problem which im sure isnt related... My card is working but it doesent seem to be recognized as a 4890... its showing up as a 4800 series. I have installed all latest drivers, so it is a little confusing. When i run dxdiag i get this...

also why does it say Total memory: 3831mb? Shouldnt that be 1GB?

thanks people

As I recall, my 4870 would show up as "4800 Series" as well in some diagnostic programs. I wouldn't worry about it.

* Approximate Total Memory - The amount of video memory available. This may be misleading if you have an integrated video card (which uses System RAM to mimic video memory)

EDIT: also is it true you americans cant get AMD black editions? thats a kick in the teeth!
We do get AMD Black Edition CPUs. It's the XFX 4890 Black Editions that seem to be taking awhile to become available here, but it's supposed to happen eventually.

Hi, sorry to keep bringing you my problems but i have a new one...

I was playing hawx then i wanted to check my download status on some stuff. So i pressed the start menu button (I have always done this to get out of a game for a sec) and hawx minimized. But now when i try to play it... the beginning videos are fine bit when i get to the main menu the sound goes off and even when i jump into the game there is still now sound. My earphones still make the very faint static noise (just as all earphones do) but there no gaming sound. It seems like sound is still coming from outside the game rather than from it.
To confirm this when i play a youtube video then gointo a game i can still hear the video.

I do remember that when i used the startmenu button to minimize hawx it a message did flash up mentioning sound but i didnt pay nay attention to it. STUPID!

anyone know how to fix this? thanks

Minimizing games is hit or miss sometimes. I usually "alt-tab" but it doesn't work every time and the game crashes sometimes.

sound no longer works in HAWX at all? even after a restart? if you're using vista, make sure the individual application volume control for hawx isn't all the way down?
