what am i supposed to plug into the video card anyway?

also like i said the powersupply still works, the mobo lights up, the heatsink fully spins, the 4890 does look alive (fan spins and the 3 power lights are flashing), the DVD drive works, and i am now going to try to get into bios...

if the mobo is broken would it still be able to power every thing?

is it even possible that even after smoke it still could work (if i get the right connectors)?

Technically you broke the card due to negligence on your part. The mod said that RMA fraud isn't to be discussed in this thread, so you won't get many answers on what you can and can't get away with. Whatever you do decide to do, remember this is technically your fault. :/

My guess is it's just the card, the goodish news is they aren't all that expensive... much better doing this than frying a GTX295 or EE i7 or something. :)

I doubt the card would work any longer, something probably failed and no longer works on the card.

so i should plug both the 6pins AND the extra 2pins into the card (to make up the 8pin slot)?

Yes...

The 6+2 pin goes into the 8 Pin slot and the second 6 Pin goes into the 6 pin slot.

Correct.

It's XFX btw, they have a pretty good reputation when it comes to customer service. I'd be up front and tell them what happened. They just might decide to let you claim your warranty. And if they don't, you at least have a healthy conscience.

Does the "6+2" connector have just a 6 pin connector on the other end or is it actually 8 pins?

I would never advocate lying. Contact the company and explain truthfully exactly what happened. You know you plugged the connectors in wrong, that part is your fault. However, the company might be at fault here as well if you didn't use excessive force, and may honor the warranty for that reason.

It should not be physically possible to plug an EPS12V connector into a PCIe 8pin socket on your video card. The two connectors are supposed to be keyed differently and it should not fit. If it is possible, they've messed something up on the card.

I'm going to have to try this at work tomorrow, but from what I know, the pci-e connectors have triangle and round plugs, and where you plug them in, also are round/triangle. So, it's pretty much inpossible to do it wrong.
They're more trapezoids than triangles, but yeah, as far as I can tell looking at my Corsair cables, both the EPS12V and PCIe 8-pin have at least one pin that's a square where the corresponding pin on the other cable is a trapezoid. Unless all of the sockets on the card are squares, it seems like it'd be hard to force the square pins into a trapezoidal socket.

As a sidenote, the Corsair cable I'm looking at has a label attached to the end that says "EPS12V FOR CPU ONLY", so I'm sure the OP isn't the first person to have made this mistake.

What the.... so what I don't understand is why he thought he needed an 8Pin connector on his XFX 4890... Are there 4890's with a 6 AND 8 pin power connector?
Look at this: click on the second to last pic.

That is an XFX 4890 from newegg.com... there are only two 6pin connectors... Is there another model from XFX that has an 8pin connector AND a 6 pin?

Off the top of my head there are at least two 4890s I know of that have 6-pin + 8-pin -- the XFX Black Edition and the Sapphire Toxic/Atomic.

XFX Black Edition has 8 + 6 pin, so do the Sapphire Toxic and Atomic. Most HD 4890's with a decent OC have a 8pin +6pin.

@ amberclad: trapezoid, have it your way ;) But really, I once actually tried plugging in the 8pin eps-connector into a videocard. Just because I wasn't looking but was still trying to connect everything. But it didn't fit, so my co-worker laughed at me coz I was trying to put the cpu-connector into the videocard :p

And jesus christ, you beat me to it :p I actually have used all three, so I can confirm. PowerColor also has oc-ed HD 4890's btw, MSI has one coming too and so does Asus.

Sure enough, I went looking after I posted and the Sapphire Toxic / Atomic cards and the XFX Black Edition (1Ghz core OC) have the 8pin and 6pin connectors. I imagine they need just a tad bit more juice due to their fancy fans and what not.

Man, that sucks... on the bright side it IS XFX, so hopefully they'll be understanding and work something out. Just be honest with them, looks like a design flaw to allow the 8pin CPU connector to fit so easily into the GPU power connector. Or maybe it wasn't easy and you forced it? Still... just be honest with them.

I think with some of the heavily overclocked cards, like the 1GHz models, they actually push a higher voltage to the GPU as well.

I live closer to the AT server :p.

Apparently you Europeans have an exclusive on the Black Edition, because last I checked, they're still unavailable in the US.

Great news! Only my graphics card is F-word upped!

After playing around with some of the wiring (after 2 hours and a deep cut in my finger from my side panel) i got my system to fully boot!

THANK GOD FOR THE 790GX INTEGRATED GRAPHICS! Because i am now able to install windows and take control of my system... Haha i have never been so happy to see BIOS.

I will be honest with the company i purchased the 4890 from and explain it was my wrong doing. Who knows maybe they will understand, i have heard that some of the XFX tech guys work extra hard to ensure fairness.

When i get a new 4890 i will come back to check with you guys (to make sure i do it right this time)

I just want to say THANK YOU to all of those who helped me, I really appreciate it.

peace x

ps. it may seem a little strange that i am so happy, but i am so because i am glad my mobo isnt fried and that i have done everything else right... my 955 @3.2 is ICE cold at 35c!

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO F-ING BEILEVE IT!

OMFG!!!

THE 4890 IS WORKING!

I was just about to pack it up and get it ready to send. I thought ahh worth a try...I put it in expecting the worst and it acted just like it had been before. But then i noticed it sounded different and as i placed my hand slightly closer i could feel... HEAT!

Now either it was about to burst into flames or i am the lucky mother fkr on the planet. It is fully running and running well (i am currently installing the drivers). I was happy before you can imagine how happy i am now :D :D :D :D

TIME TO HIT THE GAMES!

Thanks once again

peace x

You have one tough card there... knowing that I'd overclock it for all it was worth. :p
