Edit: Just an FYI, and to pre-empt any shady discussions -- RMA fraud is not to be discussed in this forum.

Im going to ring the company and say it was dead on arrival... (will they find out?)
what am i supposed to plug into the video card anyway?
also like i said the powersupply still works, the mobo lights up, the heatsink fully spins, the 4890 does look alive (fan spins and the 3 power lights are flashing), the DVD drive works, and i am now going to try to get into bios...
if the mobo is broken would it still be able to power every thing?
is it even possible that even after smoke it still could work (if i get the right connectors)?

For the 8 pin, you should plug in the "6+2" pin connector on the video card and to the "PCI-e 2" connector on the PSU. And for the 6 pin connector on your card you just plug into the 6 pin connector on your PSU. Man I feel bad for ya if your card is indeed fried.![]()

so i should plug both the 6pins AND the extra 2pins into the card (to make up the 8pin slot)?
They're more trapezoids than triangles, but yeah, as far as I can tell looking at my Corsair cables, both the EPS12V and PCIe 8-pin have at least one pin that's a square where the corresponding pin on the other cable is a trapezoid. Unless all of the sockets on the card are squares, it seems like it'd be hard to force the square pins into a trapezoidal socket.Originally posted by: MarcVenice
You probably just fried the videocard. But really, afaik the 4 pins shouldn't fit into a pci-e connector. I'm going to have to try this at work tomorrow, but from what I know, the pci-e connectors have triangle and round plugs, and where you plug them in, also are round/triangle. So, it's pretty much inpossible to do it wrong.

Look at this: click on the second to last pic.
That is an XFX 4890 from newegg.com... there are only two 6pin connectors... Is there another model from XFX that has an 8pin connector AND a 6 pin?
Off the top of my head there are at least two 4890s I know of that have 6-pin + 8-pin -- the XFX Black Edition and the Sapphire Toxic/Atomic.Originally posted by: McRhea

Sure enough, I went looking after I posted and the Sapphire Toxic / Atomic cards and the XFX Black Edition (1Ghz core OC) have the 8pin and 6pin connectors. I imagine they need just a tad bit more juice due to their fancy fans and what not.
Man, that sucks... on the bright side it IS XFX, so hopefully they'll be understanding and work something out. Just be honest with them, looks like a design flaw to allow the 8pin CPU connector to fit so easily into the GPU power connector. Or maybe it wasn't easy and you forced it? Still... just be honest with them.

And jesus christ, you beat me to itI actually have used all three, so I can confirm. PowerColor also has oc-ed HD 4890's btw, MSI has one coming too and so does Asus.

OMFG!!!
THE 4890 IS WORKING!
I was just about to pack it up and get it ready to send. I thought ahh worth a try...I put it in expecting the worst and it acted just like it had been before. But then i noticed it sounded different and as i placed my hand slightly closer i could feel... HEAT!
Now either it was about to burst into flames or i am the lucky mother fkr on the planet. It is fully running and running well (i am currently installing the drivers). I was happy before you can imagine how happy i am now![]()
