we she's still alive and just sitting in her box. I will take her to the vets. I just wish I knew if she was in pain or not.

Lol, killing the family pet w/ a shovel in front of the kids. That sure as hell will teach them who is in charge.

i did not say to kill the poor animal in front of the children, but,
do not hide the fact that the animal is suffering, and has to be put out f its misery.

the children could help to bury the little critter, and,it is a sad thing, but is a part of life.
:(

I have buried a few pets, the last 2 were cats, that ran out of the house, and were hit by cars.

When i was about 13 my sister had 2 pet bunny rabbits,I had to bury one of them,i did so in the back yard, where i knew we would not be putting our garden. My sister was there when i finished digging the hole, and we said goodbye to the rabbit. :(

To see whether/how much pain it's in, take the gerbil and very gently probe the length of its body. You will know when you get to an area of pain because she will react.

If you're really unsure about her suffering, call a 24 hour emergency vet and ask their advice.

WTF? OF COURSE it's in pain.... anytime bones break, there is pain. EVEN in your back where nerves are severed. Personally I don't understand why you'd take it to the vet, you already put the thing through two days of pain and suffering.... Why not just let it die on it's own? Obviously you don't seem to care much about it hurting or you would have put it out of it's misery.

It's a $5 gerbil.... kill it, buy another. Why spend $50-100 at a vet, just so they can say "It's legs (or worse, it's back) is broken. THere isn't anything we can do. We can kill it for you if you'd like. Just sign here (your bill)" .... What exactly do you think a vet isn't going to be able to do? Magically fixed it broken bones? Hamsters/mice aren't like other animals, they can put a cast on them.

Sorry, but that is what I'd do.

because you want the vet to make sure the animal does in fact have broken bones. not just bruised or something. you take it to the vet, he puts it thru xray, and then you see. hopefully, it wont have any broken bones and is just bruised badly.

She's gone and buried.

She never did seem to improve. I don't think the vet could have done anything. :brokenheart:

.22 lead hollowpoint. subsonic.

I had my daughter tell her goodbye before she went to bed. I did it after my kids were asleep.:(

Tomorrow I'll show them were she is buried.

Thank God you finally came to your senses! I love pets... I'd bet I have more pets than just about anyone posting on ATOT, and I'll guarantee that among those living in a city (and not on a farm), I have the lead. I pamper my pets... every last one of them. They get the bestest food, the bestest toys, etc. Heck, even my rabbits don't get iceburg lettuce, they get romaine and spinach and radiccio, etc. (in addition to rabbit food). But, if one gets seriously injured, I don't let it suffer. I've been to the vet plenty of times, but never for something that I know isn't easily treatable or for something that would be too expensive. (There's no way I'd ever pay $700 again for the treatment of a cat that ended up getting put to sleep in the end... did that once) Had you taken the hamster to the vet, you were looking at a nice sized bill... I'd bet that after you said, "go ahead, put it to sleep", you'd have been shocked to learn that he was going to charge you $20 or so to do that, in addition to the office visit fee.

Poor lil ah heck. Our bunny was having random seizures and lost her ability to walk one night just out of the blue. She was nearly 2yrs old at the time. Thinking the emergency vet could help with some sort of medical treatment, in the end, she never made it past 7am morning, and I overheard the sad news in my bed. One of the worst day of my life, hurts me very much to hear that she was gone :( Because we brought her in overnight, we got dinged $450Cdn.

But to save a life that we're emotionally attached to, it's priceless. If we had to do it again and take whatever slim chances there were, we'd do it again.

RIP

WTF? You decided to wait two days before taking it to the vet? People like you shouldn't own animals. Admittedly, a vet probably couldn't have done anything but put the gerbil to sleep. But still, you didn't know that at the time... Someone responsible, heck, someone with empathy would've called any 24-hr. emergency vet clinic. I'm sure Tampa Bay has at least a half-dozen to choose from.

Sick.

why do people have pets? I just never understood having a pet mouse or rat or whatever. How would you like to be confined to a box for the rest of your life, eating the same food and doing the same thing over and over again? If someone wants a pet dog or cat and is willing to take care of it properly and let it roam around and do its thing that is fine. But why would u stick a poor animal in a damn cage, thats just awful.

Hey My gerbil broke her leg to when she was only 1 and a half years old. My mom brought her to the vet and they said that they couldn't do anything about it so they told us to see if it will heal on its own and if she starts peeing on herself they she can get a affection so we waited a couple of weeks and she was doing fine until one day she started to pee on herself and we had to bring her back to the vets and we had to put her down so she wouldn't go through any pain.
