my mom just called me and told me she is about to buy a 02 hyundai elantra for 13,350 before tax,tag,title..............this is with the ABS package..........the most expensive package..........is this a good deal????!!!

If that's all the money your mom has...yeah. My inlaws bought my wife hers about 1 year ago...we've put over 15000 on it in that amount of time and It's still doing fine. I really think that these foreign companies are making cars w/ a longer life to compete w/ the "American" brands who are ripping us new ones daily w/ their KNOWN short life of certain parts. U'd be surprised, but Consumer Reports rated the Elantra like in the top 5 cars. So, it's a GREAT car for the $$! 😉 Be especially glad that she's getting the ABS package though! 🙂

Nothing "wrong" with Hyundais at all. They are far from the most refined automobiles, but they are definitely no longer the Yugo replacements that they were once considered. The car should be quite reliable and it should be a great piece of basic transportation.

We're selling my wife's 2000 Elantra, and my wife really doesn't want to part with the car (we're moving to Japan so we have no choice). It's been a great little car, with a good amount of acceleration for a 4 cylinder, and good quality inside. The only downside to it is the amount of cabin noise at higher speeds, but it's not intolerable (and consistent with other cars at its price, from what I've heard). We've had one maintenance issue -- a transmission gasket started leaking fluid. That's it so far.

It's also held its value fairly well -- Blue Book for it is $9,000 while we bought it for $13,000 even (tax, tag, and title included). That's not too shabby for 18+ months of ownership and 24,000 miles.

Tell her to get an Elantra GT hatchback!

Those cars are one of the nicest cars Hyundai has ever built. The reviewers love 'em!

My 2000 Protege vs my moms 2000 Elantra The Mazda is a ton better, for fit and finish

Looks like the 2002 Proteges start at 13,595

Not bad cars. I looked in them last year. In the end I personally decided that to me it was worth spending a couple K more and getting something nicer like a sentra. partly it's because the sentra is nicer but partly so I wouldn't have to say "That's my hyundai". Of course in the end I couldn't get financed anyway so the argument was moot 🙂

my mother-in-law has a Elantra.

She drives a lot for her job. the elentra is a 1999 and has 88k miles on it and it has ran great.

She has had some repairs. she had to have the tranny worked on at 80k miles. (but i think it was from my sister-in-law driving it. she is hard on cars) otherwise its been a great car.

I have a 98 Elantra, have about 50K miles on it, it runs great. Other than routine maintenance, I havent spent anything extra on it.

Well.....she bought it today......its burgandy....looks pretty nice.......has the traction control sys......abs.....and all the other features.....

She saw the GT but decided she really didn't need all that cargo space.......and for 15,500 she could've just gotten a new corolla anyway. hope it lasts long years...

My g/f bought a 2000 Elantra with about 13k miles on it about a month ago. $9000, about book value, but the car is in perfect shape, so I think she made a good choice. It seems like a lot of car for the money. I'm glad to see people in here backing up that opinion.

Comparably equipped Protege when we were buying was about $3,000 more if I remember correctly. While the Elantra was standard with auto, a/c, power locks, and cruise, the Protege required all that extra. The Mazda is a nice car, but it's not nearly the same price (at that time, at least). Plus, the 10 year Hyundai warranty is awesome. That's what made the decision for us.

<< Hyundai has come a long way since the crap they sold in the 80s. >>

couldn't agree more yakko

U R right...as a matter of fact, last year, in consumer reports, this is EXACTLY what Consumer Reports stated in their Car of the Year repot. 😉

Just pointing out that Hyundai's 10yr warranty only applied to the original owner, afterward it scaled down to 5yr/60K. I just hope this going to be the new industry standard, unlike Honda's 3yr/36K. DC already expand their warranty scope, just need the rest to follow.
