Help: Broken socket on CUSL2-C

Please help. I'm quite embarraseded to admit that I broke one of the socket heatsink tabs off on a brand new CUSL2-C motherboard that I was installing. The most frustrating thing about it was that I was trying to install a RETAIL BOXED P3/1Gz using the supplied heatsink and fan. Unfortunately, it seemed like the clip was a tad too short, because when closed, it snapped the smaller tab right off on one side. I'm very lucky that my chip didn't get crushed.

I know that most of you would have simply chunked the heatsink that was supplied, but it looked pretty decent to me, so I decided to use it. Besides, I don't overclock.

My question: Is there a heatsink out there that doesn't depend on the small tabs right down the center of the socket? If I can find one that latches on to the slightly larger tabs, I'd be able to use the mobo. In the meantime, I've already bought another, but it sure would be nice.

Thanks for any info.

Hey man if you don't overclock it's not a big deal to use the stock HSF. It's what it's designed to do afterall right? only when overclocking might a stock cooler not be sufficient. It also sounds to me like it's not your fault it broke, they are pretty damn tight so they can get the best heat transfer and it just sounds like maybe the socket's plastic was a little too weak for the big 1 GIG cooler. But to answer your question I do not know of a cooler that does not make use of the 2 tabs on the socket itself. But maybe someone can help ya, just thought I'd let ya know you shouldn't be embarassed!! You might be able to feel embarassed had u bought some crappy mobo and CPU but DAYUM! a 1 GIG PIII!
whoa. I as well have a CUSL2-C and i love it.. u will too when u get it running.. cheerio dude!!!

Please accept my sympathies. A buddy who was having trouble installing his stock intel hsf used a nose pliers to bend the clips a tad to ease up installlation. I dont know if this is recommended though.

I've seen a site, (can't remember where) that sells repair clips that catch the other tabs, sorry, search the net and maybe you'll find it.

DavidCountryman,

Was the clip that metal piece of crap or was it the new plastic cam lever thing? I have had some scary moments trying to force the metal clip down on some P3-800's, so I was real happy to see the new plastic thing work tonight on my buddy's CUSL2-C from a retail boxed P3-Gig@133. Got that monster heat sink on with no problems. The plastic arms seem to grip quite a bit of the base of the S370, so maybe you can check out if it would grip what's left of yours somehow. As far as the metal clip goes, bending it by hand before attching seems to work OK, the right amount of bend is the trick. Hope you get the board into use, good luck.

I would get a Taisol HS CGK742092 or any Alpha HS since their clips have 3 holes on each side and will use the other intact tabs (correct if I am wron you broke 1 but there are usually 2 or 3 tabs on those sockets).
visit www.taisol.com and check it out.

I remember a few years ago reading about repair or replacing those broken tabs with good quaility glue.

Sure repairing it with glue *might* hold..

But what about that dreading thought in the back of your head? What if it pops off at night or something..

*shudder..*
