A 5830 or 6850 or 460 would easily eat up 9600gt sli or even 9600gt tri sli and at times 9600gt quad sli. Even 5770 would come close to 9600gt sli

How frequent do u upgrade? If u upgrade every year then choose 6850,if u upgrade every 2 or 3 years then choose 460 as it has more warranty left.

Just get a GTX 460 and overclock it. And the GTX 460 suffers the least from tesselation compared to 4xx and 5xxx. The 6850 will give similar performance at stock, but it can't be helped in terms of overclocking, so the GTX 460 or even 560 vanilla is better over there.

The 5850 is faster than a 768MB GTX 460 and has more memory.

5830 is crap compared to the other cards.

His i5 is really calling out for something at 5850/6850 performance, but for $85 the 5830 is a decent deal. It's the same performance as a GTX 460. I just wouldn't suggest he settle for it with the 5850 within his reach. IMO it's definitely worth the extra $25. I cannot say the same for the 6850, as that's an extra $20 for generally zero performance gain.

I certainly would. A year or so of QC beats RMA'ing DOA's to Newegg. Basically he's at the point where any manufacturing defects would have already killed the card, but it's several years early for the card to die from age.

E: Hey OP, there's a 6850 for $90 shipped on FS/FT:

I am not talking about the manufacturing defects but about the extreme torture it may have suffered due to bitcoin mining :)

In older games 5850 is faster, but with tesselation enabled and especially after oc, 460 is a lot better.

One thing I suggest is bake the card. since its dead now, you have nothign to lose :D

The next guy who eats baked goods coming out of that oven might have something to gain though, such as cancer. :)

Also, are people even reading the OP? Do they realize that his resolution is HALF of 1080p, meaning less need for VRAM and raw speed?
