Decent game plagued by lag issues.. Goes anywhere from 110fps dropping down to 30 fps.. Happens on my machine, and my friends E6850 with 8800GTS g92.. It's a fun game to play multiplayer, but gets old pretty quick.. Nice to logon with a group of RL friends, and go frag.. Overall worth 10 or 20 bucks and fun to play off and on kind of like a first person shooter.. The quests are kind of fun but repetitive.. Reminds me of CoH or CoV without monthly fees.. Favorite class has to be the Engineer.. I like the bots..

Framerate issues have gotten better. I'm consistantly 80+ in most areas, and 40+ in wake hollows (enormous outdoor area with lots of flying mobs and terrain features). Game has balance issues (MM's are basically unkillable and can kill everything but the hardest boss in <10seconds). But it's getting better slowly but surely. Was it worth the $200? I'll know in a couple years(If I play it regularly for a couple years, I'll say yes).

What kind of system do you have, and do you play with AA or AF on? Also do you play in DX 10? It's not that real bad but I do have some frame rate issues if I leave my card settings rather high..

That game completely tanked on my XP x64 machine. I'd get ~60fps when it first loaded, then it'd slowly get worse and worse over the course of 45 minutes until it was unplayable. (2.7ghz AMD X2, 4gb ram, 3870). It played better on my thinkpad with integrated graphics on 32bit XP.

It used to be.

In all fairness, some things are much better than they were at launch... but my main beef is that not all of the classes can play through the game at an even pace... Blademasters, for example, are like paper vs. the later and harder enemies.

All in all, the game is pretty average. I regret buying it. I would rather have bought a Guild Wars expansion or two.

I almost bought Hellgate yesterday. Is it worth it? I have one friend who plays a couple hours a week.

I was in the beta, but it was pretty bad then. Has it gotten better bugwise?

the SP is bug free

i can't update the MP, however - g-d server disconnects

does that answer it?

i put 250 hours into it .. 3X thru it with the same Evoker - *almost* finished it on Nightmare completely thru - for the SECOND time .. capped at Level 50 but the NPCs got well into the late60s .. it was frustrating as hell as the screen was literally *filled* with enemy NPCs.
--Fun but frustrating with that artificial level cap - OK, if you just like twitch shooting demons

you know for as simple as it is I really enjoy this game. I've put more hours in it any other game I've played over the last several years.

When I first heard of this game I thought diablo style gameplay mixed with FPS was a great concept. The problem is you spend so much time shooting it detracts from the diablo element.

This game has a lot of really good elements and potential, but they still failed for many reasons. I would love to see it redone properly. The worst part imo is that the MP is just not fun enough and that is mostly due to repetition. The game is far too much grind and lacks in most of the other elements that make this sort of thing fun. This is coming from a WoW player who prefers to grind out mats when I could easily buy them on the AH just because I find it to be more fun as sick as that might sound.

The game could've done without the randomly generated maps. They did randomly generated maps so you'd "never play the same level twice." Then you realize that there is a grand total of about 3 different tile sets that repeat over and over and over. After playing for 5 hours, you've seen everything.

I've spent about an hour or two in Hellgate over the past couple days...
I can see why people are not super impressed with Hellgate.

The first thing I noticed that was bad, was the tutorial. They overlay text on the screen across everything. If you've got your inventory open, its not exactly easy to read... also, its self advancing and not spoken, therefore if you miss it you're outta luck. Their normal dialog boxes would have been much better for tutorial text instead of this... plus, there's no way to skip when you create your game. I played through the demo before getting a retail copy, and I already knew what to do.

From this point on, I basically stopped caring about story. Its all text and kind of annoying so I've been running up to an NPC, clicking next as fast as I can, then clicking "accept" to get the quest they're offering. From this point on, it has been typical MMORPG style quests, "Go Kill X Dudes", "Go get me Item X", "Go visit this dude in this safe zone." Its easy enough to run through these to get your feel for the game, but I really hope these aren't all they are.

The inventory system isn't horrible, but its not great either. It feels like they were trying to be somewhat innovative, but fell short a bit. Its very easy to fill up on loot, so you'd better have the HG:L version of a Town Portal / Escapipe so you can run back and sell off stuff.

All these shortcomings aside, I do enjoy the atmosphere, the idea behind the game, and the way it plays. I'm a Blademaster, which means I run at people and hack them up. Its fun and mindless. I have yet to try the Multiplayer component of the title, but I'm guessing that is where most people spend their time.

No problem with my copy. Been playing since day 1 and also did beta. I have a guild with about 3 of my friends in it. I was the only one who opted for a subscription but when AoC comes out that will change. Its a good game. Nothing ground breaking but I have tons of fun online playing that game than any other FPS/3rd person game I've played in 2 years.

I played it for few hours *giant Diablo 2 nut here, quit* in SP and technically it was smooth.

Don't know FPS but it was completely smooth no lag no nothing. DirectX 9, Vista 64, E6700, 8800GT 512, 4gb ram.

I would have liked Hellgate London if it was a 2D game, isometric view perhaps. Because I have the feeling that the graphics in it right now are meant as a test for the developers who seemingly never made a 3D game before, which is perhaps the actual case. The ideas behind Hellgate London are far from being bad, and honestly I rarely complaint about graphics being a down side to a game, because when I like the game-play I can often do with "crappy" graphics, but it's different with Hellgate London... not sure exactly why, maybe because most RPG's (if not all of 'em) I've liked in my life were 2D.

Check out Mythos if you're a fan of the top down, isometric view (although they are having a third person WoW-style cam upcoming). Well actually any fan of Diablo 1/2 should check it out. It's in closed beta right now and the open beta is coming sometime soon, but you can try entering the closed beta at mythos.com right now.

Inventory problem is solved by right clicking and disassembling loot. Even that gets tedious though, autodisassemble for items is very much wanted.

Environments are limited but getting better (stonehenge added 3 or 4 new types).
Story is weak. Quests are even weaker. But hell diablo 2's quests were even worse (story was better though).

Being forced to click through a TON of text on every new character (even in elite where you must have beat the game once already) gets old, but minor complaint. Once you get past the first two or three stations (towns) some of the quest text becomes actually worth reading.

Quests are all the same basic types, the couple that are "exceptions" are the low points of the game. (Shooting down the exo and killing Beelzebub are hideously boring). But there are a couple funny bits of story in later quests that make them not so bad. (Well of Eternal Happiness is one).

Regarding the bolded text, is that specific to subscribers? Because as of right now, I dont see anything worth paying for.

Mo, there's really NO compelling reason I could use convince you to not just buy HG:L but subscribe as there's hardly any content worth mentioning for it right now.

But...

I own AND subscribe to it because it's crack like Diablo was and it's really quite fun :) Especially online; co-op ftw!
