The car looks pretty sweet, however I can't justify paying $10k more for an "upgraded" car if it's based off the Altima. As it stands now I'll probably get an Altima as my next car unless the RS is imported over from Europe

You're rational sucks, it's more than an upgraded Altima, way more.

It has no more passenger room, a useless console in the rear section as an option, uglier styling, costs more, and is roughly "just as fast" for thousands more. So what exactly is worth it on the Maxima to buy it over an Altima.

I'd like a nice explanation :p

The ride is what is different. The car is MUCH quieter than the Altima and the ride is much more smoother and luxurious. Unfortantely that luxiorus (ok i can't spell) ride reduces teh "Maxima-ness" in the Maxima.

The 04 Maxima is a great car (powerful, sweet and smooth ride, etc..) its just not fit for the Maxima nameplate. Had it been called something else it may have been regarded differently by the automotive press & public. But its not a Maxima.

It's not THAT bad! I think the snout is ugly--What's with that Hitler-like chrome mustache? The Gundam dash is way too gimmicky. Even if you like the dash, I'd bet that it will get old really fast.

I agree that it looks better in person, but since it's coming up from 'butt ugly' in pictures to just 'ugly' in person that's not saying much. I defnitely agree with his comment that the grill looks like the chestplate of a gladiator at Caesars. Plus, ever since the Mazda6 came out, the overall styling and lines on the Altima and its other bretheren just haven't looked as good to me. Regardless of power and options, Mazda's design looks like a stylish, expensive and sporty sedan whereas these body styles look more like a late 90s Dodge Stratus after surgery.

Sorry, the nested quotes are getting too long.

Torque steer, for high-torque FWD cars under heavy acceleration, is caused by the unequal length (or angles) of drive shafts transmitting power to the wheels/ground at different rates.

That means one wheel is spinning (slipping) more than the other. With an open differential, it will apply more power to the spinning (slipping) wheel further worsening the problem, which causes the torque steer phenomenon.

That's where the LSD comes in to fix the problem, or at least attempt to.

People can't agree on what causes torque steer, but I have never heard of it being related to slippage.

I don't think the car knows or cares whether it's wheel hop, wheel slip, etc.
As long the wheels are spinning at a different rate (as it does in torque steer), that's all the LSD cares about.

But then what happens? The LSD locks and one of the tires, if not both, loses traction. Now you're sliding instead of torque steering.

like i said in the lexus thread, nissan has a ton of overlap... now if the max was sorta a large FM platform (the G35 is a small sedan, face it) about the size of the avalon it would make more sense

Big deal. It's just an extra layer of sound damping material which they nickled and dimed out of the Altima for it's crappy card-board interiors. Basically the new Maxima is nothing but a *very* slightly upgraded Altima. I think it's a shame to be called a Maxima given then Maxima's initial heritage.

i usually dont think cars are ugly. but i agree this one doesnt look to stunning.

on another note...
for some reason, i dont really like the futurustic looks. that probably explains why i think the new accord, nissan 350z, and 3.2tl (2004) are really really ugly.

i dig the look of the current 3.2tl though. and i really like the look of the volvo s60, that looks real classy. not too agressive, and still sharp. looks cool!!
