Nitro, would love to hear your impressions coming from the 1800 as well. I remember you were fairly enamored with the ATI IQ coming from the 7800 series was it ? How *if at all* has that changed ?
God I hate you all, you are gonna have me selling my XT and getting a GTX.
I am so ready to be rid of the ATI driver bull$hit, CCC, ATI Tool, etc, etc. At this point, I am just looking for a reason.
Well, honestly, the IQ from the 7800's to the 7900's appear to be the same. Like I said, the ATI AF is fantastic, but I think that the NV AA is a bit better. As far as shimmering goes, they both shimmer in WoW (as the article at HardOCP says), which is the primary game I notice it on. The ATI colors are nicer, period. Just more vivid. I messed with the gamma settings for the 7900GTX, and it is a noticable improvement over the defaut though.
Really, you won't go wrong with either card, they are truely both great cards.
As far as making the switch:
Maybe I'm a bit chapped because I paid an ASS LOAD of money for the X1800XT back in Dec, and ATI has decided that they will now give away this card for free with the purchase of a car wash at the local gas station. I know, I know video cards aren't an investment, and I knew the X1900's were coming, but maybe I just want to put this reminder of an extremely poor monetary decsion on my part behind me. I tried to salvage the purchase by going Crossfire, but I wasn't too impressed with the motherboard, and the load time for all the .net crap seems to be double for a CrossFire setup. Not to mention that the boot time period was quite long for a "high performance" rig IMO (It took
forever to get though the POST screen . The gaming performance was astonishing though, and the IQ was great with AA levels through the roof. That being said, I experienced a few VPU recovers, and quickly decided that I didn't much care for them. The single card X1800XT setup was rock stable, so I have to assume that the VPU recovers occured because of either CrossFire or the motherboard. I am not a fan of instability or long boot times, so the CrossFire set had to go. Plus, the single 7900GTX was cheaper than the additional X1800 Xfire Ed + motherboard.
I really hate the CCC crap, and I'm not interested in running the Tray Tool. After installing the GTX and ForceWare, I feel like a weight has been taken off of my PC... And damn, I won't miss that noise.
