Just announced after the Activsion investors meeting.

During today's investors call, Activision announced it will be releasing something called the Modern Warfare 3 Content Collection, which is "a compilation of content previously released to Call of Duty Elite premium members." This presumably includes the three new multiplayer maps that have thus far been released: Liberation, Overwatch, and Piazza. It may or may not also incorporate the new Elite content planned for March, which will consist of another new map and two Spec-Ops missions. Activision only announced an Xbox 360 version, which is due out this March, but we're guessing PS3 and PC versions won't be that far behind. In the same call, Kotick also announced Activision's plans to release a new Call of Duty title sometime this year.

i don't understand why this would surprise ANYBODY.

it's the most money making franchise this generation.

it would be retarded for them to not continue to make them from a business stand point. it's a guaranteed investment.

MW2 was the last COD game I bought, and I ended up selling it. The newest COD game I have is World At War, and I only still have it because it's not worth selling.

Can someone explain to me what is so outrageous about yearly installments? I don't see people freaking out when a TV show comes back every season.

The difference is TV shows will sometimes make new sets, instead of repainting the same one every year and calling it different.

Come on, you can do better than that.

Ok, how about "I'm not paying $60 a year to watch a show?"

How about the fact that comparing a TV show having multiple seasons to a game having yearly, full-priced installments is asinine in the first place?

A DVD/Bluray of a well produced series runs about $50-60 a season when it's first released, so the price is just about the same.

If you've been playing the assassins creed series, its really not a tough comparison to make. Each game is split up into 15ish chapters, roughly an hour or so each. Each year the story moves forward, characters come and go, and you've got a few new cities to explore. Just finished AC Revelations today and it was hard not to make the comparison. The series is particularly well suited to yearly releases, but thats probably not by accident. Nothing about it feels exploitative, and the last three releases have all been great.

Obviously cod has been thriving with yearly releases, although the TV comparison stretches a bit since the single player changes from year to year, and the main draw there anyway is the evolution of the multiplayer. A new elder scrolls every year would be a little bit insane, but I could easily go for some yearly mass effect after the shepard trilogy wraps up. I wouldn't say no to a new half life or left 4 dead episode each year either. Dunno why the idea of more frequent releases of successful games seems so preposterous. If the cost is such a burden just wait a month or two and the price drops dramatically. (I paid $30 for AC:R new)

It's really only asinine if you buy into it. You can always choose to just continue playing the current version.
