Hearing bad things about ATIs drivers

My new card arrives tomorrow(5850) and I am reading many many complaints from various forums about atis current drivers. I had a bad experience with my 9800pro and now I am afraid I am headed for that again. Can anyone who has both or has used both tell me what their experience is?

I've had a 4870 since July 2008, drivers have been no better or worse than with the nv 7900, 6800, 5900, 4200, gf3 or gf2 I had before it.

Congratulations, you've fallen for the FUD.

<FUD> unlike a GTX 470, the 5850 won't overheat, burst into flames, and burn down your house. </FUD>

I have read quite a few posts by 5870 to 480 converts who say they are so happy to be off atis drivers. It has me concerned.

I've had lots of "issues" w/ both ATi & nV drivers over the years.

Neither company releases perfect drivers, but both are pretty decent these days i'd say.

5870 > 480 converts are idiots who have nothing better to do with their money. They might as well glue $100 gold-leaf racing stripes on the sides of their case, because that'll give them about the same amount of visible performance increase.

In Indonesia it's popular not to use Cases, putting PCs on shelves. 4 people have Died due to their 480's launching due to poorly secured cards and the high fan speeds needed to cool 480's. One guy was decapitated yet actually survived because the card was so hot it cauterized the wound and Doctors were able to reattach the head quickly. Nvidia will soon be adding a Warning about securing their cards and will be introducing a new PCI-e Tab standard because of this.

I have a GTX 280, 8800 GTS 512 and a 5870, never had problems. The only time i had a problem with drivers it was with a XT1600 pro back a few years, other than that...

just where do these people hang out? You got me curious there. For one, like magickman said it really isn't the wisest way to waste your money, really doubt there are "quite few" that would actually do something so foolish; if money is no object, why not get a 480 anyway? For another, your post is terribly dubious as to where you saw these ridiculous remarks. Please share that with us so I could avoid those places for credible information when it comes down to googling for random sites.

I have not had a single problem with ATI's drivers since I got a 3850 when it first came out.

I did, however, get drunk once on Russian vodka and had a naked sword fight with Galacticon in Philadelphia. but I don't think that has anything to do with ATI's drivers.

Reading this at rage3d, nvnews, even overclock.net. Seems to be lots of complaints about stuff like microstuttering, no AA in older games etc.

Read Nvidia forums, people have an equal amount of random complaints and problems and "THIS SUCKS IM NEVER BUYING <INSERT COMPANY> AGAIN"

They both have issues from time-to-time... Last year NV had a stuttering issue with Fallout 3 they took months to fix. The only work around was to use older drivers. ATI had (has?) the gray screen issue...

So far my GTX 470 has been trouble free driver wise.

@OP: its because of people like you who start threads like this and later other people like you google "bad ATI drivers" and get more results! the perpetuality is inevitable!

i think both companies make equally bad drivers :)

one thing to consider though: ATI releases drivers on a monthly basis containing fixes to problems that arise, while NV take their sweet time and release drivers whenever they feel like it.

also, in the last couple of months, both companies released drivers which brought a significant performance boost.

Indeed.

I had Mach32 once. Cannot remember any problems. (Cannot remember anything else about it either ...)

I've seen Radeon 8500 used. Drivers were not perfect, but they were third-party and commercial. Simply because neither ATI nor Nvidia drivers did offer at the time the feature that was required.

I've looked at open-source Nouveau drivers for Nvidia. They still lack in (for me) necessary features.

See? I made statements about era long gone, about OS that is not usually involved in game problems, and about third-party drivers. Mostly irrelevant, yet pointing out that not all driver problems are problems for you. And hearsay (these days: "google") only hears the "problems" ...:sneaky:

in the last couple of months nvidia actually killed tens of thousands of cards with a driver release as well, and if you havent seen BFG10k's article on alienbabeltech, the 470 and 480 have some major driver related performance issues in certain areas right now as well.

The actual drivers have been pretty solid for me on my 4850. CCC on the other hand not so much.

Like drivers for any other component of your PC, you may have no problems at all or you may have many - you can get as many "they're terrible" or "never had any problems" testimonials as you like on a forum but your chances will be the same.

My last HD 4850 was running flawlessly and my current HD 5770 is running flawlessly. I used Catalyst 9.10, 9.12 on the 4850 and 10.1, 10.3a, 10.4 and 10.5 (Beta?!) and it's rock solid.

I thought nvidia was angry about BFG10k's reviews of the 470 and is now ignoring ABT.

On-Topic

I still have no issues with the drivers for my 4870. I'm still not a fan of CCC, but ATT works just fine.
