Well my fears have been confirmed. Have my card up and running and immediately I have a major graphical bug in gothic 3. It is a driver issue that ATI has not addressed apparently in over a year. Very disappointing as I had no issues with this game and my 8800. The shadows are totally borked. *sigh*

All your fears have been confirmed...? lol

out of all the games out there, you had to get number 3 in a series of games with REPUTATION of being badly coded and with numerous bugs.

you can play whatever game you want, but this is outright stupid to blame on the card. And i dont even know if its only a 5xxx issue or the entire ATI lineup.

Only bugs I've encountered with G3 was the quests ones and they soon got fixed with the community patches,my 4870 card has given me many years of happy gaming, overall I would say I have only encountered one driver bug on both sides over the years ,so overall both ATi and Nvidia have been positive for me,you'll probably get more issues if you overclock.

I sold my 5870s and got a GTX 260...

No I'm srsly.

Just waiting for a cooler running Nvidia card.

I'd get ATI cards if I was running an AMD system though, but I'm not...

You're not running an Nvidia based system either, so I don't get it...

I really enjoyed Gothic 3, but it was the buggiest game I've ever played. It was more like a pre-beta that they released. They don't even support it, patches come from fans of the game. Please use a different measuring stick than Gothic 3...

Gothic 3 shadow bug is a known issue with ati cards. The community did patch the game, but in the patch the provide a work around for ati cards. You don't get the same shadows you do on the nvidia line. Yeah the games is buggy.. they all have been, but they all ran fine on my 8800. This is the first one that had a graphic issue that was as severe as this.

Right, it may be an issue specific to AMD, but since this is Gothic 3 we're talking about I highly doubt it's AMD's fault here. More than likely, even though only AMD is affected, I'm willing to bet the blame for this lies with the game, not AMD's drivers. I was amazed at how buggy that game was, that they would release it like that.

I haven't had a single problem with my 4890 since my purchase.

This is coming from someone who has preferred Nv in the past. I am starting to rethink that sentiment.

Okay after running through most all my other games I will say I take back most of my negativity. Gothic is the only one I had issue with..everything else runs without problems. So ATI may have some issues, but overall it runs just fine. So I apologize for my earlier ranting. If one expects problems one does not have to look hard to find them.
That being said I will say that the ati card plays much nicer with my monitor than the nvidia card.. which is odd. What I mean by that is the nvidia card would not allow aspect until it's software loaded. ati allows aspect on boot which means the bios screen is no longer stretched and skewed.

The thread title is the truth. ATI don't know how to make proper drivers release after release.

Us always nVidia brother,, even when Intel CPU comes out with a GPU chip on it too

talk about high price to pay. 700 buckeroos maybe more

My new card arrives tomorrow(5850) and I am reading many many complaints from various forums about atis current drivers. I had a bad experience with my 9800pro and now I am afraid I am headed for that again. Can anyone who has both or has used both tell me what their experience is?

ATI's drivers are A+! I never had a problem with any of them from 9.10 RC6 until 10.3 Preview drivers! The peeps I sold my 5870s to aren't having any problems whatsoever with the Cat 10.4 & 10.5 either.

I've found out that a good number of times, people's supposed bad experience with drivers boils down to user-error. It usually results from the uninstalling and installing of drivers.

One of the reasons why I never have issues with Nvidia or ATI drivers is because IMHO, I do complete driver removals before installing a new set of drivers. This entails using Drivers Sweeper and deleting all GPU files off of my hard drive and out of my registry.

You should be good to go. The 5850 is a superb card indeed. ATI has come a LONG WAY since the 9800pro days.

The last time I had problems with ATI drivers was back in the crossfire days of the x1900xt + x1900CF edition. Lots of stuttering but they eventually ironed it out.

I think Nvidia users tend to have more 3rd party tools with AA modes, etc available so that's why I stick with NV. THough if I'd buy a card I'd get the top ATI card now.

Yup nothing has changed over past 15 years with their drivers...

errors, cant uninstall, slow performance.. This is why I stayed away from the old x800 I had for 4 years to this,,, Im happy as can be.

My rig was born 11/21/07

I have never seen the CPU go 100 percent.

games on average take up 30 percent to 60. Also my DAW cant bring my baby down..

Once I see CPU reach 100 percent for even 10 seconds straight at 90 to 100 percent is when I will upgrade. In others not any time soon....

thx
