Right now I pay nothing, but I'm sure you've seen that domestic automakers are asking for relief, big time. I'm sure my time is coming, with copays and deductibles.

WHAT? How large is your family and is there a history of illness for your family?

Well I have a business plan also, thats why I know about it. If I were to get normal insurance, it would cost my wife, kid and me around $300 or so for the same coverage that I have ($25 cp, $1500 ded, $3000 max out of pocket). But my mom had cancer several years ago and because of the chemo, developed type II diebetes. At the time, no health insurance would cover her so had to go with the business plan. When we first got it, it was $20,$1000,$2000 and cost me $800 a month. Now is almost $1900 a month for worse coverage :/... sucks

edited to add we have premera blue cross and its for wife.kid.me and mom and dad

i think i pay $75 a month for my health plan, $5/month for vision and $10/month for dental (i raised it to the highest package they offer on dental cause i knew i was going to get my wisdom teeth pulled out this year)

>>>
1) Does $611.80 per month sound reasonable to you guys?

ehrm....noooooooooo ?!?!?!?!?

I used to pay more than $650/month for health insurance (family coverage). Since I switched employeers, my new rate is like $230/month

thank the freeloading welfare people.

Imagine how much money you could save if you just invested $7300 a year and just paid out of pocket for healthcare....

Yep, break a bone and its all gone. Much less a car crash.

Let's face it. Insurance is legalized extortion - but that's just the way it is.

As a real estate agent just starting out, I'm not bringing in much income. And as I'm a private contractor rather than an employee, I get no benefits. My wife and I have had no health insurance since December, so I've taken a part time job at UPS. It's a union job, and family health insurance is free through them even as a part time employee.

I pay almost $900/month for my family. Yes, health insurance cost in the US is insane. High insurance cost is one of the big negative of being small business owner.

Lawyers, lawsuits, insurance companys (providing malpractice insurance to doctors and insured alike), drug companies, televison ads for prescription drugs alike are all to blame for the rising costs...

add to that list: lazy people who sit on their ass all day and don't exercise while stuffing their faces with fast food and high calorie diets, and later go onto suffer heart attacks and require very costly bypass surgeries; people with poor self-control and guzzle two gallons of soda per day, only to realize 10 years later that they fubar'd their glucose regulation mechanisms and get diagnosed with diabetes; you get the point. and those who are genetically predisposed to disease are just out of luck.

actually, if you want to look at it that way, you can thank the disabled and mentally ill, who soak up WAY more free medical care dollars than those on welfare (i take it you mean the poor). expensive healthcare costs in the US cannot be lumped onto just one group of people.

what are you gonna do with the disabled/mentally ill? i've fought with that question for a while now.

Although I'm not a huge fan of unions, this is something I have considered. I pretty much make my own hours at my dad's place, I really should do what you do and get some part time job.

I'd save nearly $8000 per year plus the income of the second job. Seems like a win-win...if I can make it happen, that is.

Jeebus...

I'll never be able to afford insurance if it doesen't come with the job, lol.

In 1993 I was quoted over $400 for an individual plan that did not include prescriptions. It made me so mad. Luckily my husband has a good medical plan. I feel for you.

Another observation. I've got tons of friends who work at great companies. These people have never had to even *think* about the problems associated with paying their own health insurance. It's just a benefit that comes with the job and that's that. I guess ignorance is bliss for them. (I mean that in a good way)
