my previous employer, which shall remain nameless charged 1.50 a paycheck, the next year 3.00, following year 6.00 following year 12.00 a check for vision dental health, $10 doc visists $20 specialists $5 prescriptions $20 urgent care $40 ER.... that being said thast an 800% increase in premiums.... new job i payed $75 now $150 a month and it will prolly keep going up.....

Lawyers, lawsuits, insurance companys (providing malpractice insurance to doctors and insured alike), drug companies, televison ads for prescription drugs alike are all to blame for the rising costs...

I soon am going to cancel insurance buy a individual policy thats starts at $1000 coverage (hospitalization and whatever with 2 million limit) $50 a month blue cross blue sheild. and go it on my own, sign up at the low cost clinic, buy prescriptions at costco, and let doctors know ahead of time i am a cash patient.... that gets you big discounts from most doctors.

...I think I should be happy my insurance is fully paid by my employer ( which is also a small company with less than 25 people). My boss rocks! 😎

regards

You're getting hosed man.

How large is the company you work for?

I have bsbc for my wife and daughter directly throught bsbc, we only pay $171 a month (it's not the greatest plan they offer, but very good for our needs) It's insane that at work it costs me an extra $450 for the exact same plan to add them with me (and for me only it's just $30/month)

edit: $25 office visits, $10 generics, $1000 deductable, and they pay 90% after that on pretty much everything.

I pay $208 a month for me and my wife (34 and 44)...$20 co pays, 10/15 RX I think.

no limit on hospitalization, I'd pay about $100 for being admitted.

Sounds awesome. 🙂

What plan do you have?

Well we are self-insured, fortune 500 with about 6000 employees, we had BCBS but they were denying to many claims (remember the company pays all the bills they just manage).

Now we are managed by Aetna.

you never want to have a no-copay/no-deductable plan....I really doubt those that say they do have a 'real' plan.

You have to think about it logically, if everything is free who is paying. That's the deal with insurance and it's expensive now.

we are blue collar self employeed ppl. we pay out the azz in taxes for other ppl to have free insurance from government handouts, but we cannot afford insurance for ourselves.

if we get sick or anything happens... we pay.

I pay about 16 bucks a week for health and dental..side benefit of my employer, I guess..even though I'm only part time 🙂

Wow. :Q

Up to a 15 week wait for a CT scan?! Up to 28 weeks for an MRI?! :Q

yup, and those are usually some of the first steps in diagnostics to decide if major surgery is needed.

Yeah we pay a lot. But that gives us the ability to see the doctor whenever we want without having to wait days at a time.

QFT!

$50 a month for health, dental and vision although it is subsidized by my employer. Probably has something to do with my employer being in the Fortune 500 and having a pretty large amount of employees.

That's what I thought, then I read some actual statistics and the increases in health expenses over the last decade have almost solely been the result of people no longer taking care of their elderly relatives themselves. Putting all those old people into nursing homes (and hospitals) instead of taking care of them ourselves is killing our medical system. Medicaide and Medicare's reimbursement rates for medical care are insanely low so the rest of us end up paying higher prices to compensate. It's a shame, but there is going to be no quick fix. Tort reform and trying to lower drug costs may help a little but until we can change the culture and start taking care of our elderly ourselves this is only going to get worse as the baby boomers age.

Ya, I'd imagine that would help. 😉

Oh and I forgot to mention. On top of my monthly $611 health care bill, I pay $71 monthly for dental.

It's like I'm working for the sole purpose of paying for a hypothetical major medical event sometime in my future.

well my company has over 100 employees now, but for my blue shield HMO (i want out of this plan though) it's 10 dollar doctor visits, 10 dollar prescriptions as long as it's in the plan. i pay about 25 bucks a month, the employer subsidizes 99%.

i forgot the rest of the specs, such as deductibles, hospital visits, etc.

i'm also pretty healthy, no problems like allergies, etc, which can drive rates up. my bf has to get his own insurance for school and it's pricey because of allergies/asthma.

The reason your health insurance is so expensive is because of the type you have. Individual insurance is a lot cheaper because they can be selective on choosing who to cover and what not. Let someone with AIDS plus cancer try to apply for it...he will be denied so quick it wouldn't even be funny. Now with business insurance, they accept anyone and because of this, costs will go up since more "sick" people will be accepted.

btw I currently pay $1900 a month for my family and parents...

Something to look into while evaluating other insurance plans is seeing if the company can offer a Flexible Spending plan. That would allow employees to pay medical costs (including insurance) with pre-tax dollars. There are some restrictions but overall it will save people the federal income tax on what they expect to pay for medical care. Taking your own example, see what you would save if your taxable income was $8000 less.

WHAT? How large is your family and is there a history of illness for your family?

$68 per month for myself. Will go up to $160 per month when I switch to the family plan in September.
