HE washers/dryers bad rap mainly older models??

I held on to my old combo since all I heard was nightmares about crappy wash performance, front loaders gaskets going bad, mold smell etc..

anyhow both units were already at a point they had to get put to pasture.

I figure I avoid the seal risk etc.. and get a top loader which they seem to be plenty now to chose.

Prices seem reasonable now, I was able to get a Bravos XL 4.5cuft for 525 bucks and the drier 7.3 cuft for 525 bucks.

They definitely are bigger than old-school units that were 3.6-3.8 cuft.

Wattage usage on just the washer was amazing on how little they use, from a constant 460-500 watts to a 30 watts and occasional peaks to 200-340 watts (if using the high speed spin option)

It definitely uses less water but It does soak the clothing and they it seems smarter about making sure they get agitated and sprayed with a mix of detergent and water, it suds up and washes quick. (compared to waiting for the stupid tub to fill up with water for the wash/rinse cycle in the old unit)

Less noise and the clothing comes out much drier and cleaner it seems.

The best part is using the smarter dryer, my clothing came out looking like it was actually pressed with no wrinkles. That was what really impressed me, it looked like dry cleaned/pressed.

I have not used the steam options on the dryer, not sure what the purpose of that is.

Fuck the old school shit, I am sold on this HE technology stuff.

Maybe HE tech is now pretty much tested and refined after years of people suffering through the beta test years?

got a pair about 4 years ago. have kept the washer door open when not in use and occasion wipe down of the lip for excessive water, never had a problem with mine.

The mold smell is because it tries to recycle used rinse water and shit. If you don't use it everyday I reckon yes it would mold up.

What design genius didn't see that one coming.

We use the Samsung front loader set. Two years now. No issues. Lots of high tech crap most of which we don't use. Cleans - washes extremely well. Uses HE, naturally. Have the pedestals on both washer n dryer. Comes with 10 year motor tumbler assembly warranted.
Some reviews said the same, i.e. seal, noise, yada yada yada. But no issues here.
And very large tumblers for really big washes or thick bed quilts.
Really like the Samsung's, and the technology.

I just wish they would make a dryer that reverses direction, like the washer does.
So bedding in the dryer would not clot into one big lump.
That would be something new and a selling point for washer-dryer manufactures (hint hint).
The first direction reversing dryer.
See, I'm just full of new and initiative million dollar ideas....

This is what I do and I've had mine for 5 or 6 years and only had the issue the first year when I didn't leave it open. They have cleaners for it (basically bleach).

Our Whirlpool Duets (front load - electric) are about 5.5 years old and haven't had a single problem.

If I had one complaint it's the damn washing machine really really vibrates.

We leave both doors open when not in use. For the washer it helps air dry to prevent mild/mildew. For the dryer we store whites and towels, it's on the way to the bathroom so it's easy, don't ask.

We have a Whirlpool Duet front loader set ourselves. Love them. The clothes come out cleaner than even the old Frigidaire set of front loaders we owned managed. I've had jeans with ground in grease (basically work jeans used to crawl around in junk yards) and the Duet washer has managed to get the grease out. And this is with no change in detergent over the last decade or thereabouts.

Wouldn't trade them for anything.

Leave the door open, and wipe the bottom part of of it after every cycle when it's wet. Shouldn't have any problem with mold then.

I have had a front load HE and top load HE washer. I prefer the top load HE washer. You can fit more, no gasket to worry about (it will go bad and crack), and you don't have to bend down as far to get your stuff out.

Like others, I leave the top up when not in use.

5-6 years without issues is not really impressive. My Maytag top loader has been trouble free for 26 years so far. No need to leave it open, wipe anything down, or use expensive HE detergents. Next I'll Get a Speed Queen top loader, and be set for another 30 years.

I've got a top load HE and love it. You do have to be more careful how you load it or everything will come out very wrinkled, just read the directions that come with it. Had it around two years now.

Those front loaders are just such an untested and weird technology. No one in the world uses them, so many troubles with them. /s

Loved our front loading Frigidaire laundry center. Don't know if it will still work when we get a laundry room built here after a few years idle. But it ran for 5 years without a hitch.

Never any trouble. Keep door cracked. Run a bleach wash every year or so for peace of mind. Check gasket occasionally for baby food and splice caps. Enjoy watching the Laundry Channel through the window when hiding in the basement. All sorts of good things.

And uses more water and detergent in a load than a HE washer uses in a week. And beats the living hell out of clothes as well. Yeah, real win-win there  :hmm:

HE All is no more expensive than regular ALL. Same with Tide or any other brand. But, you're right about reliability. The more electronics these things have, the more that can go wrong.

That is correct but the front loaders do not clean as well. Just something to keep in mind if you're outside all the time or do physical labor with items touching your clothes.

I have an LG HE top loader and am very happy with it. Cleans the clothes well and it is very quiet and efficient. No problem with mold and we never leave the lid open. We probably use it a few times per week.

Horsecrap. I worked construction the entire time we had ours. Not a single problem after crawling around auto plants, tunnels under detroit, on top of HVAC equipment, etc.

Wife worked processing returns and getting clothes dirty as hell. Babies making messes. No issues.

I guess the rest of the world and everyone using laundromats doesn't get their clothes dirty either?

(In fairness, there are probably shitty front loaders, but ours was -- hopefully still is -- pretty awesome. And simple dial controls too!)

Downside with front loaders though: the inevitable repair will be more costly and labor intensive than a top load, the horizontal drum is inherently harder to balance, keep water tight, etc, etc.

So the max lifespan is probably reduced. Not that it will keep from looking at a Speed Queen front loading gas dryer laundry center when we are ready... 😉

I don't think my washer is cheap or different from most. Which one are you using? Every contractor I've talked to I.e., plumber, electrician, general contractor etc. all commented on my washer and dryer and they said the same thing. Btw mine is http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007GD...7287134&sr=8-1
