I guess if you had a big family an HE washer might be important. I do about three loads a week - an standard top loader is fine. As far as helping to avoid a mold smell in washers - don't use liquids. They leave a residue on the outside of the drum which starts to collect fabric fibers. In time mildew starts to grow in them. Use a powder instead (this advice came from a repairman).

Family of 5 here. the two older kids do 2-3 loads of clothes themselves throughout the week. My wife does another 10 loads perhaps throughout the week of towels, bedding, excercise outfits, whites, dress shirts/slacks, etc. It adds up. Guess about 15 loads a week, give or take a few. I don't consider our family big either. They all know to keep the washer door open after every load.

I am having a Speed Queen delivered today because our Whirlpool Duet washer just busted on me twice last week and I said I'm done with it. First break down the belt came off the fly wheel. I also cleaned out the drain plug as it was clogged. Then after we reinstalled it and did a few loads, the water seal busted which online says "Just buy a new washer" to fix that. I bought it 4/2010, so just under 4 years old.
