Hey all,
I'm looking to get a nice HDTV for my apartment...I was thinking somewhere around 36" or so. I don't need it to be LCD or plasma, just something with good quality and that can accept HDTV signals. 1080i and 720p, preferrably. Anybody know of any good ones below $1200? Below $800?

Thanks

Unless you manage to find a deal on that Sony 36" CRT one you're best option is going to be LCD. Westinghouse and Sceptre make 37" 1080p capable HD ready monitors that sell for right around $1000, and I know you can find the non-1080p ones for less (they'd actually have tuners built into them).

I'm not sure if Wal-Mart still sells the 34" Sanyo CRT or not, but that might be another option.

What's wrong with DLP? Personally, that's the way I was leaning...if I manage to get around to finding the funds for an HDTV anytime soon.

No one recommended a specific DLP, so I'm not sure where you're getting that anyone who posted so far is slow. One, maybe two people asked why he didn't like it, and that's it. I could've understood if everyone in the thread had been linking to or naming specific DLP sets for him to look at, but that's clearly not the case.

Unless you have a very specific reason to dislike DLP (if you're sensitive to rainbows, for example) you're doing yourself a disservice by not looking at them.

ESPECIALLY if you're on a budget.

and unless you're going to wall mount a lcd/plasma there's no point to get one IMO. If it's going to just sit on a stand somewhere you can get a DLP w/ better PQ than lcds for the same price range.

And if you are going to mount it for god's sake mount it at viewing level and not above your fireplace.

I just got a 42" 720p LCD Vizio at costco for 1200. They have 37" 720p LCD's for $800 right now.

Just avoid the slimfits, there's a fairly long thread (34 pages) committed to problems with that series: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=541592

the ones i've seen are garbage. 1080i my arse. the dot pitch was so coarse theres no way it was doing that. its made for budget line so it scans the beam uselessly over the screen 1080times sure i bet. doesn't mean squat for the image that comes out. you can claim 1080i as long as the beam scans that many times, actual delivered resolution is not part of the requirement apparently.

the only decent models were the sony superfine dot pitch models. was plainly obvious those had a much higher resolution. think they are discontinued or something though

I actually have a stand that has an arm I mount my LCD to. takes up less space than a DLP and I can actually move the thing around without too much effort.

There's nothing wrong with DLP's, I actually liked quite a few of them at costco.

FTW! The Olevia HDTVs are awesome. I have one and I love it. My Olevia doesn't look as nice as my dad's Vizio for HD but it looks better when displaying standard def since it appears to have a better scaler. Either way they are both nice sets. You can't go wrong with Olevia or Vizio. Stay away from Westinghouse. Don't let the people here fool you. They are garbage.

There's rear projection not named DLP. Take a look at LCoS.

Sony's SXRD and JVC's HD-ILA both give better picture quality than lcd and plasma and cost about as much as DLP's.

Eh, I was wishing to stay away from projection, but for the price I guess it's really one of the main options. I've had 2 projections (not DLP, though) and I really dislike the viewing angle and how dim the displays are. If anybody knows of some really nice DLPs that are bright enough, I'd be more than happy to look at them. What's the consensus on Westinghouse? Olveida (sp.)?

There are a lot of issues with that too, going by another long thread on the 970xbr over at avsforums. Personally, I have an Insignia 4:3 HDTV, and I think it looks great. I paid $270 for it, and I was unaware about how CRTs don't have the "true" resolutions of 1080 and 720, but it looks good, so that's all that matters to me.
