You can get a refurbished 30" Phillips CRT HD monitor with HDMI input for $299 shipped.

Linkage to 30" models

You can get a refurbished42" LCD (if you want to go that big) for $799 shipped refurbished

Linkage to 42" lcd

I know you said you didnt want a LCD but a 42" for $799 isn't too bad, and I have the $299 CRT hd tv for almost 2 years now and its been great for a $299 set.

You can also get a Optoma HD70 HD Front projector for $895, NEW, shipped with a one year extended warranty, and 2 year bulb warranty for free, along with free 92" screen.

Or you can get a SD Optoma H31 DLP front projector for $499, NEW, with free shipping but no screen or other goodies. I have this one as well and a 100" screen from Tiger Direct for $59. Its been great, and I and my whole family love it going from a 65".

Linkage to the projector deals.

IMO if your going to go with a DLP and having to change bulbs, if you got the room, and some light control, go for a front PJ, they are cheaper, and can really bring home the hometheater experience.

Just some food for thought.

Flame suit ready.

Sony's SXRD and JVC's HD-ILA both give better picture quality than lcd and plasma and cost about as much as DLP's.
Under $1200? Under $800?

Why do people always rag the DLP's for having to change bulbs? The big LCD's are rear projection, and they have bulbs to change, too.

I've been rocking my Sammy DLP for over 3 years now, and the PQ is as good as it ever was, with the original bulb still going strong.....and this TV has LOTS of hours on it. I'm talking it runs all day, every day.

If anybody knows of some really nice DLPs that are bright enough, I'd be more than happy to look at them. What's the consensus on Westinghouse? Olveida (sp.)?

I've had a Samsung HL-S5687W for a week now, and even during the day, the brightness on this thing was very intense out of the box. I had to tone things way down to view it comfortably from 7 to 8 feet away.

A PROJECTION LCD tech gives a better picture than LCD or Plasma?

Sure, there are poor LCD and Plasma panels but all things being equal, how can a projection LCD system have a better picture than LCD? It's just not logical.

Finally someone else who is bothered by this...my wife watches a ton of those crappy design shows and they always want to mount the TV above the fireplace or sitting on the friggin floor...WTF good does that do???

Anyways, I'd agree with the people that say look at the DLP if you really don't have any specific objections...great option on a budget...

That said, those Westinghouse sets do look tempting...:D

My friend mounted his over the fireplace.. but more out of necessity, their living room was not designed for TV viewing at all.. heh. It works well for wii though, gotta stand up anyway :)

As for the westinghouse's... nice cost, but when they stick it up next to a samsung or bravia (or even the LG's) at the store, it makes me cry.. haha.

The other reason against DLP (for me anyway) is moving it. I am very happy my friend had an LCD as he has moved far too often in the past year :) (yes, I realize this isn't a legit reason, as who moves a tv that often.. but I seem to run into it quite a bit)

If you don't need a tuner you can find the Olevia 337H for around $600. If you need a tuner you can find the Olevia 537H for $750. I have the 332H which is same as the 337H except it's 32 inches. I have it in the bedroom and after calibrating it, the Picture Quality is very good. Not as good as my friend's Samsung or Sony LCD TV's but the picture is comparable and they paid over 5 times what I paid. I also have a Samsung 56" DLP in the living room. I actually prefer my LCD picture, I barely watch on the DLP anymore.

I have a 37" vizio LCD and a 65" DLP. PQ of HD between the two is very small. teh DLP looks great with HD content. But the LCD looks better on SD content.

but you can get the 37"vizio for i think $699 at sams club (maybe its $799) anyway its a great TV

BB has a 42" Westinghouse 720p for $1000 this week. Think they have teh 1080p 37" for a grand as well.

Where's this $600 olevia that people keep talking about? Is it a decent tv?

Cheapest currently is at chief value for $619. I found it cheaper a few weeks ago. Over at the AVSForum, almost everyone who bought it was very happy with it. The only issue is that on the VGA port it has some intermittent tearing issues. Also it doesn't have a tuner but thats not a problem for me since I use a hd-dvr box.

Just because DLP is cheaper, dont assume the PQ is any less. My 46" Samsung looks outstanding, and only cost $1200. I just cant hang it on a wall, which wouldnt work in my house anyways. I could probably do a wall shelf though. It's only 10" deep, and 46lbs.

and unless you're going to wall mount a lcd/plasma there's no point to get one IMO. If it's going to just sit on a stand somewhere you can get a DLP w/ better PQ than lcds for the same price range.

I actually have a stand that has an arm I mount my LCD to. takes up less space than a DLP and I can actually move the thing around without too much effort.

There's nothing wrong with DLP's, I actually liked quite a few of them at costco.

I just did a comparison between my Sammy 46" DLP (HL-S4676S), and one of their 46" LCD's. The shipping weight of my DLP is HALF that of the LCD.
