HDTV rules!!!

Yup, higher resolutions sure are nice - I watch TV very rarely, but when I do, and it's in HD, I can understand why others would watch it more often.

I'm seriously considering DirectTV for my HDTV as well. I like that they're planning the 100 new HD channels for this spring.
 
dosen't DishNetwork have a much larger selection of HD channels?

I hope so. Their selection right now is pitiful. One of the main reasons I'm still using standard directTV on my non-HD TV.

I think he's saying that the crappy compression is reason enough not to use DTV, ignoring the lineup.

I hope for the OP's sake that DirecTV got their act together with HD, as their representation of it is what made me leave them 2 years ago. You'll see many refer to it as "HD-lite".

Yes. All local channels are broadcast in mpeg4. All the new channels that are coming up will be in mpeg4. Existing non-local channels are in the old format.

The mpeg4 channels are supposed to be pretty close to OTA HD in terms of quality.

From everything I've read...Almost all of DTV's content is MPEG4 now..and the compression issues are not nearly like they were. Also, Comcast and other cable providers are starting to compress theirs too. I'm sort of looking at who is making the most moves to improve their HD lineup, and right now that seems to be DTV. They have already launched a couple new satellites with others going up soon...they also claim 150+ HD channels withing a year or two...but I think that's overly optimistic at this point. However, I don't see similar things going on with Dish, who has the most channels simply because they acquired VOOM, or any of the major cable providers to improve on their current HD lineup/quality.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to stay with DTV who I've been very happy with over the past few years, or go with Comcast. I get good deals from both sides since I'm out of contract with DTV, but the only thing bothering me is the fact I need to re-up for two years with DTV..

That was pretty much the same boat I was in. I've been very unhappy with Cox in the past (even though I still have my high speed internet with them) so I chose DTV and I've stuck with them for the past 5 years or so. They did give me a good discount on my HD intall (less than $200-they installed a 100hr HD DVR today, a new 5LNB dish and moved my old Tivo DVR up to the bedroom). NFL Sunday ticket is the main reason I am staying with DTV though. I love being able to watch my Buffalo Bills during the regular season.

God, I pray they get an HD feed for F1 though...man, that would be the clincher.
