I am looking for a HD tv for my dad, and this is a link someone posted in my thread a couple of days ago:

30" 16x9 Philips Refurb $399, free shipping

I'm a little wary about the fact that it is refurbished, but it comes with a warranty. If the factory did a good job on the rework, there is no better deal on an HD CRT. I may recommend it to my dad.

I'd sortof like one because most of my content is divx and I think it would look great on there, I just need to know how much 25' of component cable goes for :scared;

Like others have said, i have yet to see any other technology match the black's found on CRT's....

I've had a Panasonic 30" HDTV for a year and i LOVE it...

In fact, Sams Club used to sell a watered down version (less imputs, same PQ) for around $630 or so.

I'd be real leary of that deal if I were you.

Good responses guys! I was half expecting a bunch of "you stupid n00b go 16:9 42"+ or not at all" responses. This is encouraging 🙂 Well that makes up my mind, thanks 🙂

I just bought this Samsung for the bedroom. Don't have HD but I did order an indoor antenna to get OTA HD. All in all, I like the tv a lot.
Only complain tis that it makes this strange "tone" when turning the tv on/off. I even called their tech spport and was told theat it can't be disabled.

What's OTA HD? That's one of the ones I was looking at, although the cheaper model is probably what I was looking for (no HD tuner)

OTA=Over-the-air. So, regular broadcast TV as opposed to cable or satellite TV.

Thats strange. The other Sammy mentioned in this thread has that On/Off melody feature, but it can be disabled.

I picked up a 27" 480i/480p/1080i CRT HDTV from Wally World for just under $300. 32" widescreens I've seen for $500-ish. I'd say unless you need a flat panel for size/weight reasons, CRT's are still the way to go.

I would love to get my hands on a 1080p widescreen capable CRT in the 32" range - but I don't see that coming available anytime soon if ever.

How is it disabled? I can try the same method on mine. The tech support guy said I was the 2nd person to call about that and it wasn't able to be disabled.

How about $20 + shipping?

Keep in mind that a larger higher res set may make lower quality video look worse. Some stuff that looked quite good on my 36" SDTV looked pretty sh!tty on a 480p 76" screen.

Gotcha. There are fees associated with OTA HDTV correct? Or is that just cable? Sorry I'm completely new to all this 🙁

No fees for the OTA. Go to this site to see what is avaiable from your home. Just put in your address and click on the "Digital" to see how far you are from the station/tower. You will probably need an indoor/outdoor antenna.

these tvs might be slightly cheaper, and possibly no sales tax at ElectronicsNation

In spite of the AT thread someone posted above, this seems like a pretty good deal. Also, most of the people in that thread seemed pretty happy with their sets.

Hmmm....I should go check out how "narrow" the screen is on those WS CRT's. It's going into a bedroom so it'll be rather close than far away.

Just a quick math refresher.
The inches (or centimeters) given for the TV is the diagonal.
If it is a widescreen then the dimensions are 16^2 + 9^2 = 18.33^2

So a 30" HDTV = 26.2" wide and 14.76" tall, right?

A 32" diagonal = 27.93" wide and 15.71" tall

What's the point of all these recommendations for TVs that don't even support 720p? If you're getting an HDTV for the Xbox 360, you're gonna want 720p, or you might as well stick with your sh!tty SDTV.

its a nice feature to have. but smaller crts with normal resolution type dot pitch might not be able to actually resolve anywhere near the full detail of hd. but it'll still be better than sd of course. only really nice crt wide screens i've seen are those super fine dot pitch sonys'..and they cost more.

Somewhere in the menus you can disable it on the one my family member has.

So lemme see if I understand this correctly...

You're saying they're both way too small?

😉
