HDTV CRT - worth it?

Just curious - I'm currently playing my XBox on a 19" tv, which is alright. Looking to buy a new TV to complement my XBox 360.

I have no desire to spend $1300-2000 on a flat widescreen HDTV. So I'm looking at a traditional CRT, around the 26-27" (with a flat panel front). I was looking and HDTV CRT's are only about another $100. Is it worth it (don't have HDTV channels right now, just for gaming) to get a HDTV CRT? Or just go with the normal flat front CRT?

Good question. I'm curious about this myself. Though I'm really in the market for a big hdtv myself.

:) It's not that I wouldn't mind or don't have the money to buy a badass HDTV right now, I'm making more now than I ever have before. It's just I don't need something that big really, and I think a regular TV would work. :)

Yes a 26-27" CRT is worth it if you have the space for it. Prices have gone down a lot lately. I have a 27" 4:3 CRT HDTV, and I love it. SD content looks good and I can live with the little black bars on top and bottom when I watch something in HD.

I have a Samsung 27" HDTV and game on it, it's sweet, especially w/ component cables.

<-- has a PS2 and GC (yes, I got the component cables for the GC too)

i still think tube tvs produce the best picture possible. i have a 30" wide hdtv that looks amazing with regular sd, xbox, hd, dvd...etc.

Demon - which model do you have? And do you guys all have 4:3, or 16:9?

And about the non 16:9 - I'm not going to watch movies on it really. I've always played games on a 4:3 so that's not much of an issue with me.

CRT's still produce the best image quality and deepest blacks as far as I am concerned

Yep, hence the "another $100"

I have a Sony 57" CRT 16x9 HDTV and have been very pleased with it's picture quality. bear in mind that viewing from a side angle will not be as good as siting directly in front of the picture.

Purchase a 27" or 32" Samsung 16:9 crt...will do 480p/1080i/480i, you can get one in the $500/$600/$700 range, I have one that's 4:3 and still looks great

Check some of the Circuit City or whatever stores near you. My Dad just got a Samsung 16:9 32" widescreen Open Box for $500, it has no scratches/burn in and runs great. Apparently some guy bought it but didn't realize how much it weighed or how deep it was and couldn't fit it in his cabinet. Fit's great in my Dad's fireplace, though!

Man, thats only about useful for a small bedroom or dorm room. Think about it, a 26 inch widescreen. Top to bottom actual screen size is going to be tiny:(

Assuming you have the space, some of the best pictures I've ever seen and calibrated were on tubes. Loewe's/Philip's tubes were gorgeous even though I don't like their processing...the Sony tubes, although expensive, are just gorgeous. Their 30/34" WS sets were always great, while their 4*3 40" set is probably the best tube I've ever seen. Don't forget that it weighed a few hundred pounds :D

So if you don't mind a bulky CRT and have no plans to upgrade in the near future, then by all means, have at it. :)
