HDMI vs DVI - Motherboards?

I guess my question has several layers to it.

Ive read that HDMI does the same as DVI, but my understanding is DVI just handles digital video where HDMI handles digital video along with multichannel audio. Is that correct or does DVI support audio channels as well?

My second questions is regarding motherboards that support HDMI .. I know that AOpen makes a i915GMm-HFS in Europe that has HDMI out. Im am curious to know if there are any other mobos that have HDMI out as well. I am looking into making an HTPC and I thought it would be cool to be able to hook the HTPC to my TV by HDMI.

Thanks for the help and I look forward to the replys.

DVI is just video, no audio. HDMI is as you say both high-def video and multi-channel audio.

I was unaware that there were any boards that had HDMI. Guessing since thats a European product that I wouldn't have heard about the AOpen one. I'm sure there will be more in the future, and video cards as well. Personally HDMI is of no help to me. I will be running video to a monitor and audio to a different device, and so having it all go into one and then, if possible, passed through the display into the reciever/decoding device.

I suprised to find out also. I suppose I could always go connect my DVI and onboard audio to my TV then send my TV audio out to my reciever so I can have sound on my system along with my TV. I just liked the idea of having 1 cable to run both audio and video.

Hopefully newer mobos support this. I think i would be an awesome feature for HTPC and entertainment centers in general.

I know this may be kind of off subject for these forums but does anyone have any recomendations for a good recevier that supports many HDMI inputs? Thanks!

"I have come across a new board which takes a Pentium M processor (by aopen again) which is rather pricey but seems like it does the job:

It says it has HDMI out which my guess is via the Component connectors? I am unfamiliar with HDTV so let me know if I'm wrong or right." Located Here

I dont see where it says anything about HDMI out but this isnt the first thread that Ive seen someone mention HDMI out for this particular motherboard.

That board does not support HDMI.

It does support YPbPr which are just your Component Video Adapters, which are very good. I would but the IQ above that of SVIDEO (Obviously since it is HD). That will be you HD support you are seeing.

There are no motherboards, and i dont know of any video cards that support HDMI (Although the AIW cards may have support)

Sapphire Radeon X1600Pro HDMI card is scheduled for availability in April

The big empty space beneath the HDTV connector is typically where the HDMI connector would be placed, although this item has been removed for the US version of the board.

We're probably on the verge of some HDMI IGP motherboards with Intel and ATI (nvidia?, VIA?) chipsets available soon, and Sapphires card should be out this month.

Are there any devices out there that will let you run combine a DVI signal and a 5.1 or 7.1-channel audio output signal from seperate output devices into a single HDMI line?

Would I be able to buy the European version and have it work or is there different power standards that would prevent me from using the Euro version?

Im not sure, I was actually looking for some converters or some kind of cables that would allow me to connect either my s-video/componet/DVI with my audio to an HDMI cable. Something to cut down on the ammount of cables running behind my system.

Yeah, something like that would be very, very useful. I might need such a device in the future as well.

HDMI pretty much uses the DVI standard for transmission of video data, but I have no idea what audio standard it uses.

Ive still been looking without finding anything. Dont think I will ..

Does anyone have any idea of I can use that european version of that motherboard? Or will it not work with US power?
