It would be cool if the new cards came with a DX11 game like DiRT 2 as a promotion.

That just looks like a pre-rendered trailer.

Look what Codemasters did with Operation Flashpoint 2.

Dirt 2 clip there divided into 3 parts, watched it earlier, looks crazy good imo, love the shadows and reflections

Actually I think games are already reaching a point where they look better than real life lol which is exciting

And by "better" I mean in the same way a good photography does, it manages to capture light in a way we cant see with our own eyes, and its amazing to look at

My guess is that the demonstration is being shown on a PS3.

All this hype is just AMD's marketing guys doing what they get paid to do. Realistically all that matters to us all is the performance upgrade these cards should bring. Stuff like tessellation aint gonna mean shit if the consoles can't do it, so don't expect a flurry of native DX11 titles from the big players any time soon.

However, we did learn at that AMD has a card with performance better than Radeon HD 4850 but consuming less than 75W. We would expect this to be a flavor of Redwood, RV830. Evidently, AMD has mastered the 40nm process and managed to reduce power consumption while maintaining good performance.

If true, this would be very nice. Would this be able to run without an external power connector on my crappy power supply??
Seriously, this is better than the 4770. The 4770 uses more power (80 watts I believe) and has lower performance than the 4850.

Wow coming from a long drought of little to no knews in the PC industry, we now have rapid succession of competitive SSD's a rapidly lowering prices, new video cards arriving, new DX11 specs, new operating system (W7), and new processors (i5) all in the next couple of months.

Whew, I am going to need a cigarette. 😎

And a new shot of the upcoming monster...

There had better be a heat spreader on that core. Judging from the thermal compound imprint, that is one big die. For ATI that is.

I'm sure they made a suitable GPU cooler, I think they know what they're doing. 😉 My guess is there is something directly above the GPU, you can see 4 screws just beyond each corner of the copper portion of the cooler. My guess is there is a heatsink right above that portion of the cooler.

No indications of a 2GB card out the gate? I wanted some headroom and hoped I could grab a DX11 card with 2GB.

Imagine if ATI's intention is to cause financial problems to NV, (i doubt that this intention (if true) will overpower the cash need! (so big profits per die size)

if it would, It could design a (5870) 32ROPs DX11 4870 (less or around at 370mm2 ) at 300$!
Even the DX11 5850 at 200$ would be faster than DX10 GT285! (470mm2)
150$ DX10 GT285 (470mm2) anyone?

Also add the rumours about the possible delay of GT300 (Q1 2010 launch?)

Imagine this strategy for the whole product line!

Imagine the bad stock opportunities for NV, the cash flow problems, the finacial results (add Q3-Q4 chipset market results), the stock market problems!

I wonder what ATI's strategy is for the future!

lol!

here's to hoping the 1600SP part is $300 at launch. if it is i will definitely be picking one up to replace my 9800GTX

Unfortunately, Nvidia has too big of a name so that wont happen, not suddenly like this, even if R870 destroyed the GT300, Nvidia would probably still sell more based on name alone

Kinda like Intel vs AMD

nah, nvidia would sell more cause a lot of the people who do F@H end up spending thousands on NV cards for their CUDA based folding rigs due to the PPD they can crank out. if i had a 6 figure income and i was living on my own, i would probably have about 20 computers up and running at any one time, all of which would have the highest PPD generating NV card configuration i could cram on a motherboard. the profits nvidia makes off people who do that are probably considerable. i would still put an ATI card in my main gaming rig if it would net me more gaming performance, but every time i upgraded my folding farm, nvidia would make thousands, at least until ATI comes up with a similarly performing GPGPU solution that has a F@H client capable of outputting the same PPD

What's the PPD difference between 4890 and 285 these days?

The difference is like two fold. It's not because of a lack of gpgpu performance though, it's because of a lack of proper support for ATI's current architecture in the folding client.

yea like i was saying. stanford is probably working on an openCL or ATI stream based client as we speak though. hell, i could make a house call on whoever runs the program if you guys really want an answer, im only like 15 minutes from the heart of stanford campus lmao.

For Intel, it's actually because they really do make better processors. And have been ahead the game for quite some time. People tend to buy AMD cause they are considered the "underdog", or since Intel is so successful, people see them as a big bad corporation and go with the lower market share choice.

This is part of the reason but I also bought mine because at the time this was a fairly cheap cpu/motherboard combo compared to what Intel had.

I think he meant back in the P3-P4 days when AMD made faster processors but sold much less than Intel. 1999-2005 anybody?

to pay back the bill they owe; they are deeply in debt

the speculation grows and we still don't really know anything about it yet
- or did i miss something concrete in this thread?
😕

I agree!
Like I said: (i doubt that this intention (if true) will overpower the cash need! (so big profits per die size)

But i like surprises!
