Just curious to how much power will the HD4870X2 use from a power supply.

Anyone care to share their thoughts or if does anyone know the exact wattage?

Well, AT's testing showed a system draw running 2 x 4870 in CrossFire under full load, with a QX9770 cpu on an Intel DX48BT2 motherboard, to be at 421 watts....and remember, that's a full system load, not just the video cards.

Basing on what you have found, if one was to run 2 HD4870X2s in CF configuration, with an e8400, a 700WATT could run them?

Sure, as long as you're PSU has 2x 8pin PCI-E and 2x6pin PCI-E connectors.

If the PSU could actually output around 600watts on the 12v rail, yes.

or 50a on the 12v rail, actually. many many craptastic psu's are out there that claim to have huge wattage but have very weak amperage #'s. jonnyguru posted some very good stickies in the psu section that go over this info in detail.

having said that, a quality 700w psu should have 50a or greater on the 12v rail(s) and be fine. as an example, my hx 620 has 51a.

I don't know what you're asking since the 4870X2 card isn't even out yet.

If you're asking if a 700W power supply will run a pair of 4870's in Crossfire, I don't know about that since the lowest wattage power supply certified by ATi/AMD for just that scenario is 850W, at least so far.

This is the Crossfire cert'd power supply list....the 4870 CF cert'd power supplies are listed first

Wow, so the highly-vaunted HX620 isn't supported?
I wonder if the Antec Earthwatts 650W will support two 4850s in crossfire.

Remember, the power supplies ATi/AMD lists are only the ones tested and cert'd so far.....and the salient point is so far.

Since the Tt Purepower 550W is certified for 4850 Crossfire use, along with the Corsair VX550, and the Antec Neo HE 550W, I'd hazard a guess and say the HX620 is more than capable of doing it, too. (I say this because the +12V output on the HX620, at 50A, is more than the output of all the combined rails....+3.3V, +5V, and +12V....on the previous mentioned three "cert'd" power supplies.)

its kind of funny seeing how the GTX260 and GTX280 use up more power than the ATI cards and yet based on reviews the ATI card perform better and also use less power.

The HD4870 in xfire requires at least 600W (official requirement) so I don't think the X2 will require any more than that. It would more likely be less power-hungry than an xfire between two HD4870s.

AMD really got it right this time. First great product since the merge.

I'm also sold.

Bye bye Nvidia.
Time to put my X38 Crossfire to good use.
