Because the drivers just use auto detect. The fan fix and power play fix is done via bios. Unless you manually specify to the drives to use "xxx" instead of auto detect settings.

Well, that dampens my enthusiasm quite a bit. I was hoping for a wonderful powerplay fix.
Remembering, Nvidia fixed their 8800GT's fan speeds by mere driver updates so Id expect the same from AMD/ATI.
AoC after another reinstall without Kaspersky AV running on install and new 8.7's still runs like a dog after its just been neutered so yay me![]()

The thing is the new BIOS has already been given to vendors. So if you were an early adopter you tend to run into issues. I would imagine that most 4850's (4870's?) with the fan and power play issue will be fixed on the retail level by the time the 4870X2 goes onto the market.
If you were an early adopter you could have a few options:
a) Talk to vendor and see if they will accept an RMA for a new card with updated BIOS.
b) Flash to new BIOS yourself and talk the risk of possibly bricking your card.
c) Manually edit the driver profiles to use a specific fan speed; but this doesn't fix power play.

As for it, It seems to improve the flickering problem when overclocking on DVI port 2. I'll do some more testing tonight.

Correction, there are still flickering problems with dual monitors and overclocking with both the MSI bios and visiontek bios.
This shit needs to be fixed.

The 8.7 is the exact same driver as the leaked 8.7 There I was hoping the glitches in Mass Effect would disappear... Here's to another month of waiting.
EDIT: Same or lower as it didn't allow me to 'update' the device driver to 8.7.
