HD4800 Drivers out!

It says CrossFire Scaling. That probably means they added a CrossFire profile for that specific game to these drivers, as there wasn't one before.

Because the drivers just use auto detect. The fan fix and power play fix is done via bios. Unless you manually specify to the drives to use "xxx" instead of auto detect settings.

Beat me to it! Though I don't own a 40XX series card yet, I've been checking AMD's site often in search of the 8.7 Catalyst drivers!

Shame that there's no fan speed control...not everyone will flash the bios on their $300 card.

This is the "money shot" folks. The 40XX series cards have been fantastic up until now, albiet with patched driver support. We've been waiting on these drivers to see if indeed the 4870 (sorry, 4850 owners....the Big Brother always gets the attention) is the real deal.

I'll be searching the net over the few days for UPDATED 4850/4870 reviews to see if it still kicks as much butt as before...or maybe MORE???? :Q

Report in! If you've got a 4850/4870, post your updated benchmarks and real-world results~!

Well, that dampens my enthusiasm quite a bit. I was hoping for a wonderful powerplay fix.

Remembering, Nvidia fixed their 8800GT's fan speeds by mere driver updates so Id expect the same from AMD/ATI.

AoC after another reinstall without Kaspersky AV running on install and new 8.7's still runs like a dog after its just been neutered so yay me 🙁

As for it, It seems to improve the flickering problem when overclocking on DVI port 2. I'll do some more testing tonight.

The thing is the new BIOS has already been given to vendors. So if you were an early adopter you tend to run into issues. I would imagine that most 4850's (4870's?) with the fan and power play issue will be fixed on the retail level by the time the 4870X2 goes onto the market.

If you were an early adopter you could have a few options:

a) Talk to vendor and see if they will accept an RMA for a new card with updated BIOS.

b) Flash to new BIOS yourself and talk the risk of possibly bricking your card.

c) Manually edit the driver profiles to use a specific fan speed; but this doesn't fix power play.

yea mine flickers with i use 2 monitors and overclocking anyone see if this fixes it yet? not going to be at my desktop for a while .

Re: All the early adopter issues.

And that's EXACTLY why I haven't purchased a 4870 yet. I got "burned" on my 8800GT purchase (bought it the first week) and wasn't too happy about that. But a driver update later and all was well. If NVidia can fix crap on the first driver refresh, why can't AMD? 😕

I really want to purchase a 4870...but I want to read UPDATED reviews of the card w/the 8.7's.

Correction, there are still flickering problems with dual monitors and overclocking with both the MSI bios and visiontek bios. 🙁

This shit needs to be fixed.

The driver versions are different. The beta drivers are 8.520 compared to the cat 8.7 which is 8.512. You can already see that the beta 8.7s are newer in the sense that it is based on a higher ver of cat driver. So im assuming its based on the next cat driver i.e 8.8 and also from the fact that people (rage3d) who went with the official cat 8.7s from the beta driver 8.52 showed performance decreases and stability issues.

The 8.7 is the exact same driver as the leaked 8.7 🙁 There I was hoping the glitches in Mass Effect would disappear... Here's to another month of waiting.

EDIT: Same or lower as it didn't allow me to 'update' the device driver to 8.7.

actually... the 8.7 or 8.8 denotes when it was released, not the actual driver version.
8.7 = july 2008, 8.8 = august 2008, and so on.

8.6 is v502 (AFAIK), 8.7 is v512, and the leaked unstable driver is v520, but is probably from an earlier branch, that is, v512 might include fixes that are missing from 520, but be missing some new features that it has.

So.. you are overclocking to a flashed card and you think that AMD should fix your problem?

OMFG LOLFELMAO UR UPGRADING YOUR BIOS WITH ANOTHER ONE THAT COMES FROM AMD... DURRRR
[/sarcasm]

I am sick and tired of that BS, there is nothing wrong with flashing your bios with a newer version, it all comes from AMD directly. And all NEWER cards WILL have the newer bios on them, just early manufactured cards use the outdated one. Also the cards are identical save for the sticker, in fact the bios even have a line that says "assembled in" and it is the same wakovia or something in all of them. AMD makes the cards, puts different stickers on them, and sells them. The only reason we use the MSI bios is because nobody posted the newer bios online from a vision tek card (which is identical save for a line that says company... which you can set to whatever company you want in RBE)
You people should stop making a deal out of that already.

And he even specified that the ORIGINAL bios has the same exact issue. (not that it matters).

Sweet, will go try these out now. EDIT: These working fine for me- good stuff.

EDIT: Same or lower as it didn't allow me to 'update' the device driver to 8.7.

I experience no such problem with Mass Effect, if you are referring to a shadow clipping problem, that can be fixed with an ini tweak, have a look at the Mass Effect forums- it's Biowares problem.

8.7s working fine for me, even tried some old MMORPGs like SWG (free month for old timers being its their 5th anniversary).

just a reminder, if you did an edit through your profile for manual fan speeds it has to be done again if you reinstall drivers. I forgot how hot these things get, my 4870 was idling at 89C, lol.

Oohhh I am curious. I notice a VERY bad glitch with Mass Effect, the faces will have very weird "shadows" if you will. A lot of crap that makes it look terrible.

Crysis still has TONS of bugs though. No scaling for one. 🙁

X_X If these are the same 8.7 drivers as the leaked, I can't use. Everytime I tried installing them, it gave me an error about not detecting my cards because they weren't ATI cards. >_> So freaking stupid.
