Google says they are owned by NBC Universal, so HD DVD if they decide to release titles.

"Eternal Sunshine," "Lost in Translation" and a few others are already available on HD DVD. this is good, b/c there aren't currently any HD DVD exclusive titles that I would like to own (those that I don't already have DVDs of). If Focus starts releasing more, I might be increasing my Red stock.

The Bourne collection does not release until December 11, and the Die hard collection (and the new live free or die hard movie) releases on November 20

Okay comparison, but Warner is screwing everyone over with dvd quality 640k Dolby Digital audio on both formats!

Oh well its not a movie that really stands out needing anything better than that IMO. It's mostly dialogue driven.
Is it priced equal, or higher than the dvd release?

Do we own high definition players to play high definition content, or dvd quality content?

Sony, Fox, & Disney all have lossless audio on their new releases. The Shining was mainly dialog, yet it got TrueHD on HD DVD, PCM on Blu-ray. Why not the same for Warner's Oceans movies? Makes me wonder about the reason they didn't include any HD audio track...

Cutting costs. They don't have to pay someone to remaster the audio and re-encode it. They just transfer the track from what was already produced.

Don't have to remaster PCM.

The dvd is list price $19.99. The Blu-ray list price is $35.99. The HD DVD list price is $39.99.

They better give me better audio if I'm paying more for the disc. I'll excuse the releases in 2006 & early 2007, but not now, there is no reason for them not to include better audio. Is it cost cutting, or the HD DVD capacity & bit-rate? Sorry to bring it up again, but 640k Dolby Digital is not acceptable anymore for the price premium.

They have to remaster the Dolby Digital track. I don't know where you're looking at prices either...http://www.amazon.com/Oceans-T...&qid=1195168950&sr=8-4

$24 for the Blu-Ray edition. Not $35.99.

Now I have a question. In a movie with no explosions, and reliance on dialog and maybe a bit of music to enhance the mood, can you hear the difference between TrueHD and Dolby Digital? Also, what you're essentially paying for with any HD release is the 1080p picture. The first thing people notice with any HD film is the picture quality.

You see that little spot on the Amazon page that says list price. I even said it. The point is not what the dollar amount is, but there's a sizable difference between dvd & Blu-ray/HD DVD prices.

I suppose it's acceptable if Star Wars and Lord of the Rings ships with 640k Dolby Digital? After all, we only buy for the 1080p picture, right? The more I think about it, the more I'd kinda rather have the formats stay as niche formats, instead of watered down for mass adoption - if it means stripping out quality for cost savings to reach mass adoption.

Are you so naieve to believe that those movies would be released without TrueHD? Seriously.

A movie like Ocean's Thirteen IMO doesn't really deserve an HD release to begin with.

Becides, nobody forces you to buy anything.

Are star wars and Lord of the Rings dialogue driven? Not that I am saying it should be the norm on every dialogue driven movie...but the sound tracks of star wars and LOTR necessitate higher quality audio a bit more IMO.

I still don't think you would hear a difference between Ocean's 13 in DD and Ocean's 13 in trueHD

QFT.

Again if you don't like it, don't buy it.

Anyone know when/if there will be a cheap Blu-Ray player to put some competition up against the $99 player from Toshiba? I was gonna buy a HD DVD player for a family member as an x-mas gift, but they were talking about Blu-Ray and when I asked what they thought of HD DVD I got the typical "Blu-Ray is better, I don't like HD DVD".

Yes they are uninformed about the true differences, but they have their reasons. Anyway, if there were cheap Blu-Ray players then obviously more ppl would buy Blu-Ray (and I could leech movies from family as a bonus).

I've since gotten an HD-A2 for my bedroom and an HD-A1 for the living room.

The big deal really is that it offers a cheaper way to play movies.

You can get a Blu-Ray drive for $240 at newegg for example. Plug it into your existing PC and run a few wires out from your video card to your TV and from soundcard to receiver.

The loss is, no full quality TrueHD or DTS-HD. Still better than DolbyDigital however.

Alot of people do more than just movies. They have it setup as a DVR, TV Tuner, Blu-Ray and/or HD DVD player. I don't need all that, but the capabilities are there with the right add in cards.

Having a seperate HD DVD player and Blu-Ray player would be more expensive (assuming one has the PC to playback these after getting the necessary drives). Now that you can buy a HD DVD player for $99 it's getting harder to recommend HTPC for this exclusive usage. Except perhaps for Blu-Ray media.

it could be awhile. the HD DVD exec in one article was right: BD is more expensive tech inside the players and it will take a little time for the equipment to come down in price further.
however, software sales seem to be the norm for the BD camp, and will probably continue.
I hope the BD camp can bring down player prices somehow this season, but it seems doubtful. It would definitely help me, as I want BD to win so I don't have to buy a player/different player. :D PS3 FTW. :D

I get my posts deleted why?

He (cmdrdredd) was saying FUCK this and that to me in every other post!
I was pushing him on the subject of HD. What's wrong with that?

Unfortunately, it is allowable now, please voice your opinion about swearing in that thread.

You were "pushing him" outside of the original thread in which the discussion was taking place.

My father, Uncle, and Aunt are set against HD DVD. So I can't get them a $99 player and then leech the movies they buy (so I don't have to buy as many :) ). If Blu-Ray players were reasonable they'd probably get one. They all talk about HD, spent money on getting HDTVs and 5.1 setups etc. Still watching normal DVD though. I was hoping that this year would be the push for HD in the home, but it's still a bit pricey. Sure HD DVD is cheap, but no Disney films.

DVD didn't drop the floor on their prices when divx players were priced at a dime a dozen. :D

Sony & Panasonic at least will be having bundle deals, free player with an hdtv purchase. Player prices are half of what they were last Christmas. The 40gb PS3 is $399, the Panasonic DMP-BD30 is $499. The Samsung BD-P1000/1200 will probably be on clearance somewhere.

I forgot all about those Divx players...what a waste those were. Yeah I know Blu-Ray is cheaper than it was. Still, Sony needs to be agressive and get noticed like Toshiba has done. We know Sony has the pockets to do it.

Not this season. And honestly will be surprised if they have one by next season as well.

I was thinking of getting a cheap Toshiba as an X-Mas present for my brother. He'd be happy with 300 and the Bourne movies...but it stops there. I was thinking to myself, what would he really enjoy? well, he loves those Pixar movies, and classic Disney stuff. He has a kid. It would be a dead piece of tech for him.

Sony sure has the pockets...but why do people keep ignoring the much deeper pockets that Toshiba's good buddy, Microsoft, have? ;)

Well with dreamworks you might start seeing more kid-friendly movies. Shrek 3 for example but movies like Bee movie are sure to follow.
