HD 6950 for low 1440x900 resolution

This isn't the greatest time since AMD just dropped support for the card, but yeah, if it's a 2GB model it should suffice. Performance should be somewhere between a modern Radeon R7 360 and R7 370.

unless you are getting it for free or almost free I would pass, 1GB is horrible for games like Fallout 4 and the driver support was bad and yesterday it basically ended.

now it will work well for old games, and some not so old games, but for things to be released on the near future, and as I mentioned Fallout 4 and other recent games it can be quite bad, a 260X/gtx 750 2GB is much better.

1GB is too little for modern games. Had it been a 2GB model you'd do okay for most games at 720p/900p at minimum/low.

Assuming you have a quad core desktop i5 2500 or better that is. At the least.

In 2016 I would expect 7850 to 7950 2GB+ to become the norm for low at 1440x900 for a good experience. Along with a 2500k/2600k @ 4/4.5GHz at the very minimum.

There are so many good deals on GPUs at this time of year it almost makes me sad to see someone with such an old card. 😉

It's a core 2 quad at 3 ghz 🙁 it's a Friend's system but he wont be playing the most demanding of games like TW 3 and Fallout 4. It'll mostly be for other games that came out pre 2014. But he does want to play the newest assassins creed and i predict that it'll be an unplayable experience

A Quad Core 2 at 3GHz with the HD6950 will be able to play all the pre 2014 games easily at 900p. I will say even GTAV and Witcher 3.

I would assume the 2 latest Assassins Creed will not run well enough,

Witcher 3 and GTA V should be playable with significantly reduced settings and some performance problems,

fallout 4 is just horrible once you hit the heavier areas with 1GB, and the DX11 Radeons also have a bug with godrays.

it's the 1gb model 🙁 wasn't even 2 gb considered overkill back when these cards first came out?
2GB was the standard configuration. 1GB was a budget configuration released later.

In any case, as the others have noted you can get away with it to a degree. But more recent AAA games are going to have a hard time fitting into 1GB even with everything turned down.

Don't worry about AC Unity or Syndicate as you can easily spend $550 on a graphics card and they'll still get hammered maxed out. The last 2 AC titles are extremely demanding (or poorly optimized with everything maxed out).

If he already has the 6950 card, go with that for now. Unfortunately for your friend, even if you upgrade the graphics card, in some games a C2Q @ 3Ghz is slow...

... even when paired with a GTX980:

Luckily for your friend, it's possible to get a decent Core i3 4170 CPU+GTX 950/R9 380 GPU+mobo+8GB DDR3 memory upgrade for $300 or so <-- and that rig will provide a better gaming experience than a PS4.

I recently came from an HD 7850 OC (2GB) and there were a few AAA games at 1650*1080 that made me realize it was time for an upgrade. I imagine 1440*900 won't be much of a difference and the 6950 is even worse than the 7850.
