Tell that to the computerbase.de dudes, you know those that gave us the shimmering problems of the 6800 series.

I've linked to the data.

I'll repeat it.

10% as the minimum at 1920x1200.

computerbase who?

I gave you a image in my prior post. :) sorry it was late.
Look at those results they are very accurate for most of those cards.

You know that is exactly 10% right? LoL

88/80= 1.1

We weren't talking power consumption aren't we. This is a raw testosterone contest between the 2 cards vs. purchase price. But, if the OP concern is power consumption, then it is a moot point at suggesting NVIDIA graphics.

dude even power consumption is a moot point when overclocking these two cards.

with a GTX 460 at 900Mhz and a 5870 at 1Ghz which is roughly the same percentage overclocks considering the stock clock differences.

Thats a 8 watt difference, if you are trying to say saving 8w is going to matter at all you are crazy :)

It also is a 2GB memory card...

At one point I was gonna get the ATI but I read that there are grey screen issues and some people are having problems with this card (well, almost every card had issues with some people)

Right now I'm leaning towards either of the GTX 460. It does run pretty cool right?
Yes it is quite cool and quiet at stock clock.

But get pretty damn loud at 900++ MHz core clock. And, insanely loud ++ hot at 1040MHz

yeah they get loud if they get hot, but all cards do. I never had a cooling issue till i went SLI, and im going to solve my SLI cooling issue with a new case tomorrow :)

oooopps, ok i can live with 10% but not no 15%, thats bull.

It just depends on the games tested. Computerbase.de tests 13 games and 6 of them are DX11.

The 5870 is stronger in DX11 games compared to the 6870.

15%

Only Dirt 2, of the DX11 games tested by TUP falls on the 10% at 1920x1200. Well, and Metro 2003, which is simply useless since the cards are under 20 FPS, while in the computerbase.de, they tweaked the graphic option to have playable framerates.

Oh jeeeeezz, and the guy reviewing was breathing harder on the gtx460. :)

I'm not sure if that post is supposed to be serious or not, but an additional 1GB of GDDR5 memory will increase consumption quite a bit.

And lets not forget the 900MHz GTX460 most of the time, and especially at the 1920x1200 and 2560x1600, still loses/draw to the STOCK 5870 1GB that consumes 70W less.

Of course when the GTX460 was $200 less expensive, that was great, but at $50 difference, that is meh.

It should win, it at least 25% more expensive. This thread did start as a best bang for the buck thread before we got sidetracked.

My point is that even OCing that a GTX460 to speeds that aren't guaranteed to work on every GTX460, a stock 5870 is pretty much equal in terms of performance.

And while the GTX460 went from a card that doesn't consume much powerto a power hog, the 5870 is still an efficient card.

OC the 5870 slightly, and the 5870 will be leading performance again.

Is the $50 extra worth it?

It is up for each individual buyer. What isn't true is that you simply OC the GTX460 and get 5870 performance with no drawbacks for less money.

It look like an OC HD5870 is roughly 10% faster than the GTX470 at stock clock.

IMHO, therefore an OC HD5870 is at best 5~10% faster than a OC GTX460.

I don't see any games there.

The gray screen issue was fixed about a year ago. Which problems are people having?

I also don't know what is going on is this thread. Are you guys seriously comparing OC results? Who the Hell knows if the cards he buys will OC anywhere near that?

Another vote for the 5870.

All of the cards listed in the OP offer great bang for the buck. The 5870 is simply faster out of the box. Both the 5870 and GTX460 overclock well typically. The 5870 will still edge out the GTX460 when both are overclocked, but you are paying more for it. You really can't go wrong with either choice. But, at your resolution I would get the 5870. You may pay a small premium for the faster card, but it is the better choice at that price, in my opinion.

ok boys the sale is over...the 5870 is $280.

If the op didn't buy a card yet, the gtx460 wins easily.
