HD 5870 vs GTX 460

I have a AMD quad 635, 4gb ram, windows 7.

I'd like to game in 1900x resolution on a 22/24in monitor.

Which of these offers best bang for the buck or would i be better off waiting for a better deal?

Palit GeForce GTX 460 Sonic 1024B $160 after 30MIR

ASUS ENGTX460 1GB $150 after 30 MIR

SAPPHIRE 100281-3SR Radeon HD 5870 1GB 200 after 30 MIR

The Asus or the Sapphire offer equal bang for the buck. It depends on how much you wanna spend. The 5870 is about 25% faster but cost 25% more.

at that res, go for the 5870. Since you can afford it, go for the fastest card within your budget.

unless its hideously overpriced.

$200 for the HD5870!!!

That's a great deal, go grab it before they all sell out. It will beat out GTX460 in just about every game by 10-20%.

re-fixed, add a 25% overclock (at least) on the gtx460 and the overclocked 5870 is only 10% faster for 25% more money.🙂

He did say best bang for the buck 🙂

Im going to agree with happy, they both overclock well and the 5870 will end up ahead. But it should as its more money by 25% and its not going to end up %25 ahead of the 460 in performance. Bang for the buck would go to the 460.

720P is not a high res and a 460 would be fine.

However if i was going to upgrade to 1080P or above res i would probably get the 5870. If they wernt $350 when i purchased my first 460 6 months ago i would probably have CF 5870's right now not SLI 460's 🙂

Fixed. Add an overclock and that's 30% easy.
I like to see a full spread of games bench between the GTX460 vs. HD5870 (both OC to max) before I can make that judgement.

IMHO, at max OC the bench gap between the 2 would be quite narrow.

Maybe Anandtech can pick this up and do a complete test/OC article.

I put at 10%, would be less with your badass gtx460. 🙂

Yeah but at those OCs the GTX460 might as well be a GTX470 with all the disadvantages on the power consumption and total heat generated vs the 5870.

If you can afford the 5870, and at $200 vs $150, the efficiency plus the extra performance, justifies the price difference. Unless you live on a very cold place.

What is the gap between the 6870 vs. 5870?

Below is the performance at OP resolution:

So will a GTX 460 be enough to run, say BC2 @ 1280x720 60+ fps?

i have 4870 mobilities (slower than a desktop 4850), and just one of them runs the game at 50+ most of the time at 1920x1200 with settings maxed (no AA).

The 460 is probably about the same as both of them in xfire, and i run with 4xAA at 60fps all day long.

We weren't talking power consumption aren't we. This is a raw testosterone contest between the 2 cards vs. purchase price. But, if the OP concern is power consumption, then it is a moot point at suggesting NVIDIA graphics.

It is all in the same package, like OC potential.

For some it might be a consideration, for others it wont.

Some 10% at that resolution with no AA, up to 15% with AA.

Although the 6870 doesn't have much core OC potential, although it has some on the memory side.

It look like an OC HD5870 is roughly 10% faster than the GTX470 at stock clock.

IMHO, therefore an OC HD5870 is at best 5~10% faster than a OC GTX460.

Why? I thought the NVIDIA 460s are lower power, relatively

At one point I was gonna get the ATI but I read that there are grey screen issues and some people are having problems with this card (well, almost every card had issues with some people)

Right now I'm leaning towards either of the GTX 460. It does run pretty cool right?
