"The cult is right to be scared. Going Clear is spectacular stuff.
Literally. Scientology thrives on spectacle, and one big advantage the film has over the book is that it can show us footage of Scientology’s big “events,” which look like Nazi rallies crossed with Hollywood awards shows.

It can also show us video footage of the church’s leaders dissembling and evading when confronted by reporters.
Seeing is disbelieving: Watching this stuff, instead of merely reading about it, somehow makes Scientology both more ridiculous and more chilling."

The whole opposition to Scientology is a curious social phenomenon. They're really no different than any other religion out there.

-Bilks money out of believers with false promises of salvation. Like the Catholic Church.
-Viciously litigates against those who criticize it. Like the Catholic Church.
-Conducts covert operations to hide its crimes. Like the Catholic Church.
-Thrives on spectacle and conducts bizarre rituals. Like the Catholic Church.
-Believes evil beings possess our bodies, and regular prayer sessions are required to cleanse them. Like the Catholic Church.

The only real difference is the Catholic Church at least tries to encourage people to be halfway decent to their fellow man. As opposed to Scientology, shuns outsiders and treats non-believers and apostates like they have the plague. Like Islam.

Isn't scientology, like, already pretty exposed?

Yeah, it's low hanging fruit. But I'll give HBO points for having balls. Being an entertainment channel that relies on Hollywood stars for their original series airing this will cause them some problems down the road. It's dangerous for anyone in show biz to criticize Scientology or Judaism.

Not to mention the inevitable lawsuits that will surely follow, Scientology loves lawyers.

Yup I feel the same way, the people that follow other religions are the first to hate on Scientology. It's pretty ironic.

I'd be far more impressed if HBO did a scathing criticism of Islam, or even aired some of Tibetan Buddhism's dirty laundry.

Of course a documentary on Scientology would need to have "spectacular stuff" wouldn't it? Why else would any such film get funded?

I haven't seen the "documentary" and know very little about Scientology but this is a hit piece. It was conceived as a hit piece before a single piece of research was collected or a single word written.

It is what they set out to make. Calling it a documentary is ridiculous.

Just watched it all, was pretty good.

They even left out some major things, I live in Clearwater, which is one of the major HQ's

I expected to so a few things I know of that weren't even mentioned to my surprise, like the whole .44 Magnum killing someone references and a few other hot spots.

I'd like to see them go down myself.

Why wasn't that a documentary by definition, and they did actually leave a lot of "spectacular" stuff out of it.

Go down for what? I have not seen the HBO piece, but I read Lawrence Wright's book a couple of years ago when it first came out. It's pretty shocking, but let's be real here. Compared to Christianity and Islam, Scientology is like the teddy bears picnic.

Everyone but crazy people think they are crazy, and crazies can't be reasoned with, so this seems pointless.

Not really, the amount of money they move around at the moment and people they affect in the background is pretty staggering, to a degree.

But I suppose a lot of Corporations do it these days.

I live near their HQ, I do not think anyone that were practicing Islam locally would be starving people in reinforced rooms, or calls out Code whatever they are for .44 magnum kills like used to be rumored about, and get away with it.

My brother did the heating and cooling when they were remodeling one of the hotels down here they had purchased, he flat out stated it was a pain in the ass as they had installed heavy duty screen into the walls and was a pita, and they had to get out chop saws just to put in duct work.

Bullshit, I haven't been to church in 40 years and I despise them.

My wife is a long ago lapsed Catholic, she really doesn't like the whole mess either.

They sort of remind me of the Jehovah's Witnesses the way the ostracize people and seclude themselves. Back when I was renting cars, I'd occasionally have to pick people up at the Watchtower compound. That was an eye opening experience. They're super friendly to outsiders (potential converts anyway) but there's signs everywhere that you don't belong. They make you buzz in at the gate and keep an eye on you while you're there. Very sterile environment inside. Cold. Not like any mainstream Christian churches I've been in.

One day they damaged one of our cars and tried denying it. Told us they'd never rent from us again after we sent them the bill. One customer we were glad to lose.

...
Religion is just another competitive marketplace with only a few major players. The established ones don't want someone else trying to muscle in on the market, and the existing customer base is pretty attached to their current selection.

It's OK, just need some scientologists to start blowing people and themselves up then they'll be classified as "touchy" religion and no one will mess with them.

Scientologists are not Jehovahs Witnesses in any way shape or form.

I used to get those in my complex every weekend whe I was in the Marines in Hawaii.

Different mindset, in many ways.

I was referring to the atrocities committed, the illegal acts, the body counts, the truly horrific things that would make a person want to see a religion "go down". On that score Scientology does not compare to the biggest offenders like Christianity and Islam.

But the amount of money is also minor leagues. Sure, Scientology is rich and counts some truly wealthy people among the deluded, ummmm, I mean, among the faithful. But Scientology is in the minor leagues there too. Their wealth is a pimple on the backside of the financial resources of Christianity and Islam. And they're a long way behind a bunch of other religions too. We might view them as dangerously obsessed, oppressive kooks and they're all that. But they are FAR FAR FAR less dangerous than the kooks leading Christianity and Islam. Scientology is kids stuff, they have a lot less influence, a lot less wealth and cause a lot less damage to the world than some of the major religions.

Yes I'm well aware of that.

I watched it and it's not that great of a documentary. It's just more of what we already know. Nothing that blows open the "Church".
