Must resist.....

But ya, the need for 3-4GB is already here, especially with Vista. I actually couldn't believe I was hitting 1.6-1.8 GB commit charge in XP running Dark Messiah with everything cranked up, uncompressed textures etc. at 1920x1200.

Yes i'm pretty sure it will work with your motherboard. Make sure you update to the latest available BIOS.

and OCZ support is pretty good if you have a problem, you can visit their forum

so does that mean that i am not limited to 1.8v memory? Are there BIOS settings I will need to change to change the memory voltage? I am really confused about this voltage issue, and everything I try to read about memory voltage always pertains to overclocking. All I want is to know what memory is compatible with my mobo. According to the manual, only 1.8v memory is compatible. I want to get the highest speed memory that will work with my mobo, but it seems that most ddr2-800 (or faster) memory requires 1.9v or higher.

1.8v is spec, overvolting from spec is a common way of making memory 'faster'.

if you want to know if your board can do it, go into bios and look at the options under memory timings or voltage adjustments. keep in mind that you'll probably have to set that manually once you get the memory, as performance memory usually defaults to a fail-safe mode when freshly installed, in my experience.

I placed order for two individual 1GB sticks and just got a call from them saying they don't have them and expect new arrival in 7-10 days. The girl asked me if I wanted to keep the order or cancel it, I told her to keep it, we'll how this turns out.

can i get into the bios without installing memory first? looking throught the manual i didn't see any voltage adjustments. Also, if i purchase memory like this buffalo firestix or other memory which the specs listed are higher than 1.8v, will it work at 1.8v or do i have to adjust the voltage? Again, I am not going to be overclocking at all. Thanks again.

You can't get into bios without memory installed. Most likely (although I can't guarantee it) the memory will work at 1.8V, but only at speeds 667 or lower. If you want faster than that you will need 2.1-2.2V.

thanks guys you are extremely helpful. hopefully this will be my last question on this topic: if I want my ram to run at 800 speed, would you recommend me spending a little more money for ram rated at 1.8v (like this: 1.8v kingston ram at newegg), or would i be better off returning this mobo and getting a different one that allows me to change the memory voltage?

mchurchm, I'm pretty sure your mobo BIOS will allow you to change the memory voltage.
and also in MOST cases, memory will adjust to your mobo settings. So that OCZ i showed you earlier should work just fine ( and the price is cheaper ).

BUT if you can still return your mobo without restocking fee, why dont you get gigabyte DS3 rev 3.3

There are some cheaper price of this mobo out there but make sure you get rev 3.3 cause thats the latest one and support 1333FSB out of the box

For my purposes what are the advantages of this board? From the reviews it says its great for overclocking, but since I am not oc'ing, what advantages does it give me? I was thinking of getting this Arock board. Its a little cheaper than the ds3 board and it allows me to use amd which i prefer. Also, it has onboard video so i can put off buying a video card for now.

where can you get the DS3 rev. 3.3 @? I tried calling newegg and got the typical response of how i can't be guaranteed the rev. of the board when ordering. They couldn't even guarantee me that i'd get 2.0. So i called around everywhere and finally found one company that could at least guarantee me rev. 2.0.

If you or anyone else knows where i can get rev. 3.3 please let me know, i'd definately return the 2.0 for the 3.3 since the 3.3 has 1333 FSB bus needed for the quad-cores in december.

if you're not overclocking then this probably isn't the ram for you. corsair value select might be more appropriate.

and that gigabyte board won't do you any good if you're getting an AMD chip

ok and your 100% sure of this? Have your ordered from them? I specifically called them (and newegg, i think they are the same company), and both were telling me that they couldn't tell me the rev. # i would get. Furthermore, i have read on various oc fourms that some people have been getting v1.0 from newegg recentely. That was why i was just trying to get 2.0.

Also, i even called the gigabyte sales office in california, and spoke to a rep. and asked him when the rev. 3.3 boards would be available to consumers. He told me not until Q2, so i said around april, and he said yes. So i'm having a hard time believing that clubit has 3.3 in stock, unless you have ordered one and have 3.3 in hand.

If anyone has anymore insight on this please post. Maybe this is off-topic for this original post, but i can paste it into the DS3 post if anyone complains.

clubit ad newegg are in NO way related. (its newegg and chiefvalu that are)

clubit has 2 separate listings for DS3 boards
this one specifically says rev3.3- assuming this is the board everyone is talking about as "DS3" is kinda vague
http://clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=A4830994
now that doesnt guarantee anything, but thats a fairly bold thing of them to do to even place the rev. in main product title as if to say "hey- we got the 3.3s!!"

It's not dead, it's just on back order and they've raised the price for the 2GB kit to $280.00.:(

Anyone who didn't jump on this (including me) is now free to commence sobbing.
