Just got back home from a 7 day trip to Nashville, Tennessee where I attended a "Get Motivated!" seminar that my Dad had tickets to... at the time, I thought he wanted to go to actually learn something, but at the end of the day, it became pretty apparent he wanted to go to see Gen. Tommy Franks... (whooptie f***in' doo...)

At any rate... I learned a hella lot... had a great time... met some pretty cool people, got Peyton Manning & Steve "Air" McNair's autograph on two seperate footballs I picked up at Wal-Mart the day before when I found out they were gonna be there. Rudy Giuliani was there too, but his security detail was five people strong, and I know from experience that sometimes its just best to not try to say "hi". Zig Zigler was there too... a little too religious for me personally, but still, a great speaker (and great man). I have no idea why in the hell they got Tommy Franks to speak... he didn't say anything at all worth a damn, other than showering praise on the military (not that we don't deserve it); I mean, c'mon, you're there at a motivational / investment seminar, talk about how you motivated troops or something; give people some insights instead of playing the tired old four star routine (anyone in the forces that's been around anyone with 4 stars will know exactly what I mean by this).

When that 757 touched down at HNL, I was so happy... I didn't realize how much I really missed Hawai'i until I was gone for 7 days... this place truly is home; I almost wanted to plop down in the aisle and scream out, "I'm hoooooommme.... I'm HOOOOOOOOOMMMMEEEE ah ha... ah ha...", yeah... but I didn't, because I still have some sanity left.

Anyone who gets the chance to check out one of these "Get Motivated!" seminars, I hafta say that for $39, I have to recommend them... there's a lot of good information put out from the course of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Just don't be a crappy planner like my Dad & his business associate were... I mean... let's face it, if you put 6,000 people into a convention center... in the middle of a city like Nashville, TN... and then you turn them all loose at the same exact time for lunch... YES MORONS... we won't get to eat! Thanks Dad! Of course, it could just be that I'm a complusive planner who will map out every single detail, would have ensured we would have been at the convention center at 6:45 a.m. when the doors opened, would have called ahead at the best restaurant in Nashville and had a table reserved and waiting on us, and would have ensured we got parking right beside the convention center... but I digress.

I'm hoooooommmmee!!! I'm HOOOOOOOMMMMMEEEEEEE!!! [plops around on the ground waving arms and kicking feet]

I'm always on the lookout for a roommate... rent is $800 a month, I'll need first, last's, and a security deposit. Wash any dishes you use, don't leave your dirty clothes in the bathroom when you take a shower, and if you bring a girl home, make sure you take pictures, and you're welcome to use the entertainment center to put on some Marvin Gaye so you can get it on. Send all applications via PM!

Cost of living in Hawaii is ridiculous. Apartment prices in Honolulu are exorbitant. Good thing I live on the Big Island.

sounds like you don't get off the islands much. ;)

I keep saying that I would love to live in paradise but when I was in Kauai/Maui for 14 days, toward the end of that trip, I was itching to come home to NY too... it's just what you're used to.

Umm, if you're asking where I'm from, then the answer is Hawaii.

Oops, I mis-read that. I thought you had moved from the mainland.

My wife and I looked at housing prices in Maui when we were there last September and they were even more ridiculous than SoCal where we live now.

Still, I love San Diego. I don't really want to live anywhere else.

depends where in Maui. If it's up on Mt. Haleakula, a 3-bedroom shack (which is pretty accurately described) costs a mil. Off the mountain, I was hearing $550k for a regular 3 bedroom. Not too bad considering.

I live on Pearl Harbor, since I'm still an E-4 and I can't move off base... yet. Later this fall when I pass my rating exam and make E-5, I'll probably move off base (yes, the roommate application above is a joke. :))

Is housing hard to find?

Question 1: See above.

Question 2: Finding housing in Hawaii is like finding housing in all places; its easy to find if you know how to look and you know what you want. There are some great rental units in up & coming areas that can be had for a steal, but like any small place with a lot of residents, there are trade-offs. Ewa (Eh-vuh) is a great place to live, but traffic is usually bad in the mornings & evenings in that area... I like Aiea and will probably move out there somewhere when I can.

Initially for a new resident on the island, yes, the cost of living is going to be high. This isn't because living in Hawai'i (on O'ahu, anyway) is any more expensive than living in say... New York City, or Los Angeles, or Phoenix, or Seattle; this is because you won't be in good with the locals, you won't know where to go to shop, and other things like that. One of the best things a newcomer to the island can do is become friendly with the locals - they know where to go and what to do. If you befriend someone in the Navy (Or Air Force too I guess), then they can bring you along to the Navy Exchange (B/X for AF) and Commissary as a guest and you can buy products alongside them (which is substanially cheaper than out in town). The savings at the commissary are so ridiculous that I can get two 2-inch thick, 8 ounce center cuts of beef tenderloin (filet mignon) for about $15. Granted, all military personnel living onbase receive COLA (Cost of Living Allowance) to offset life here, and it dramatically goes up when you move offbase. I get about $135 a month I think, compared to about $330 a month for an E-4 living offbase. You can go to the DFAS website and find out all that crap if you're more interested.

The answer to your question is: No, the cost of living is not that high once you are armed with a little bit of knowledge.

I know a bum out at Waikiki Beach who lives on the beach, sleeps on the beach, and for a job, when he sees a tourist passing by a coconut tree, he asks them if they'd like a coconut; he charges $10 per coconut to climb the tree and knock one down. He estimates he makes over $40,000 a year. So no, it doesn't take much to live in Hawai'i.

I fly off O'ahu all the time actually - and I've had a brief in New York City and I fell in love with that place... I love the big city lifestyle, and Honolulu has all the splendor of a big city, but the laid back pace of island life. I really do 'count my lucky stars' that I've had the privledge of living here.

Apartment prices are reasonable if you shop around. I know of very nice studio apartments going for $475 to $500 a month. You must remember that O'ahu is a tiny island compared to Kona, and honestly, this is where all the action is baby... you gotta pay to play, as they say. (ooh, I made a rhyme!)

JM: Maui housing prices are far worse than O'ahu's... so I can understand how you'd consider them as 'ridiculous', although you have to know what the market is doing to get a good picture of whether or not a house is 'ridiculous'ly priced or not. Maui is just 'one of those markets' in the United States that will always command a premium no matter what.
