30 mins is a normal commute.

Yea, I can almost see the University from my house (could if there was a clear view), but my commute takes about 30 minutes each way.. 20 of walking and 10-15 driving depending on traffic.

What really pisses me off is that there is a much close parking lot at a local city run fitness center, that has plently of free space, but students cant use it. A bunch of old people go there to walk on the track, and they get pissed off when students park in their lot.. so they called the city and complained like a bitch..

So now, the city pays two guards $15 an hour to make sure students park a 10 minute walk further, so the old farts can have a few extra spaces closer to the door, which is less then a 20 second walk away, and don't forget they are there TO WALK for an hour on the WALKING track.

God damnit old farts suck.

also my bro-in-law commutes about 60miles each way, each day. (working a 12 hour shift inbetween).

Hes put something like 35,000km on the car in the last 6 months. I think the average is about 22,000km per year.

Yeah, I spend about $60 a week on gas and another $20 on tolls. That's $325+ a month just going there.

One other guy commutes 6 hours but he comes up and stays in a camper for his 4 days on and goes back home only for his 4 days off. Hows that for a commute.

I got that beat. I used to coomute from Nashville to Miami once a week. It was not too bad if I could catch the Nashville-Miami direct flight, but that was only twice daily. If I missed it I had to try to get to Fort Lauderdale and take the bus to Miami. I then worked on a Tuesday, had Wednesday off, then worked on Thursday then tried to get back home to Nashville. My work consisted of flying from Miami to St. Thomas and back so it wasn't that bad.

I formerly drove 127 miles round trip daily between North Austin and Fort Hood. Yeah, the drive sucked.

Today, my round trip is about 60 miles, not including commutes 2x weekly to Killeen for classes.

people should really factor in how much it is costing them to commute. If you have a decent car, the average per mile cost over the lifetime of the car (this counts initial cost, gas, maintenence, everything) is about 25 cents. so for a 175 mile commute per day this costs:

175 * .25 = $43.75 a day! say you work a 240 day work year, then it comes out to:

43.75 * 240 = $10,500.00 a year!

i hope you make enough to justify that, also time is money and you are wasting 3 hours a day driving. would drive me insane.

Yeah, but when you drive there, you get paid for it, right? :)

A company would need to pay me a six figure salary for me to drive that far to work.

And if they paid you that much, you could afford a new house nearer to the job.

Two words to make your commute much, much more tolerable:

satellite radio

Or, MP3 CD player. :) And I assume that they even make MP3 DVD players. You could store like a week of continuous music on a DVD.

I'm not sure those exist just yet, but when they do start selling for reasonable prices (say, $300-400), I'll be all over it.

I see from your profile that you live in New York.

What are you going to do after a 12" snowfall?

175 miles at 25 mph=7 hrs.

You might wanna put a blanket in that car.

12" is no problem with snow tires all around. Just to have to slow dwon to 30mph on the Thruway until they get around to plowing it.
