See, it's hopeless, Marty. I downloaded and unzipped your link and got a text and language dat file, that's all. I will see if I can find Leech on google.

OK, Marty, I found and installed something or other called Leech but it has some sort of server error when I open it. I figured I maybe needed to drop a link like you said, of some kind so I opened your second link to mandrake, but I got a notice that says that page isn't on the mandrake server any more. I found the download link for mandrake and found a mirror in california and copied the link. I well try to figure out where to put it now and see if anything happens.

Ok that's the same name on the zip I downloaded and installed. When I open it now it just sits there saying it's checking for an update. I'll get to the rest of the instructions now.
 
don't worry about the update. The program is no longer being maintained, so there will not be any updates. But the program is fully functional, free and one of the best FTP progs out there.
 
Well there is one problem. I think I figured out what to do although your very amazing screen thingi goes by so fast I don't really know exactly what's happening. When I click a mirror site, and I made the mistake of clicking one with old mandrake on it instead of the 9.0 I have so far gotten invalid user name and or password. I got a hunch, from what little I seen so far that I got to put an email address in Leech somewhere. I tried NY WASH PENN and stealth so far. None will let me in. It's hopeless, but I'll keep trying. I may have to read the directions for leech if you don't know. Damn. I almost never understand help files.
 
Ok, I can't stand it anymore. What is with all of this FTP stuff!? If you are having that much trouble downloading the iso's with an FTP program just do it the easy way.

1. Go to http://www.linuxiso.org

2. Pick which distro you want to use, any i386 files will work. (Redhat)

3. Click on the links and save the .iso files to your hard drive.

If you want Redhat 8.0(Psyche), you only have to download the first three discs to install everything.

 
Thanks, again Marty, I went back to mandrake downloads, not the mirrors, but the 586iso's and found one in Calif. Disc1 and 2 are comming in at 100kb a second. WEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Either burning them if they download completely or the installation will be hopeless, though, just wait. 😀
 
Silverbullet, the problem with Http was that my connection died in the night, number one, and my computer froze so that was a waste. It was also 4 hours to do two disks and thses two will be an hour and a half. I don't know what will happen if the connection fails, but I'm hoping it doesn't. And wouldn't you like to understand what's with all the world of ftp, not that I will, but I'm farther than I was yesterday?

I just hope I don't forget how I do stuff so I can do it aqain.
 
Merry Christmas and thanks, Red. I'm at this moment 20 minutes away from completing the download. I got plenty of bland disks and a nice 40 speed burner. I want to try burning so I can describe how to do everything in case people want to try too.

Boyfig, what happened to scare you away from linux? I ain't seen it yet.
 
Saw your post in the other thread. If you wanna find out where ISOs were downloaded, search for m*.iso on your HD.
 
Heheh, marty. I searched for *.iso and found nothing, but it was right after the download finished and Leech was still open. Now when I tried m* I found them, but they also come up with *.

On now to try the burning.

Edit: Well that went prteey good it seems. The instructions for using nero given earlier in the thread, while not completely accurate, were sufficiently close that I got a disk 1 and 2 the first of which will placed in my cd drive brings up an option screen. COOL! Now I have to disconnect my monitor keyboard and mouse from this machine and hook up the machine I want to install to. It has windows on it so I'll try partitioning and a dual install. Something, of course will go wrong. 😀
 
Well I knew it. Tried to install onto a 9 gig disk with Windows ME. And to create a new partition in the available space, but didn't see the slide to control size so I got this tiny partition and went back to resize it. Made it like 4.5 gigs There were 4 all together, one for windows and three for linux but when it came time to choose packages or whatever they are called I only had like 196 MB to put everything. Even the standard install said there wasn't enough room. I can change everything as long as I make it smaller. Larger no way. I don't have a third party tool like partition magic. The instructions are, of course, in computer gibberish about slashes and roots and I don't know what else. Hopeless.
 
Start it up again, delete all the partitions except for the winME one, and then create your two new ones.

Partition 1 will be for ME

Partition 2 will be for linux. It will be named / (sorta like c:\ in windows), and you can format it with whatever filesystem the installer chooses for you (to keep it simple). Click on the mount point button and if not already there, type /. Hit enter.

Partition 3 will be for linux swap. I'd suggest 250-500 MB. It should be pretty simple to figure out on your own.
 
Silverpig, thank you, but I can't figure out how to delete the partition. I'm in an instalation routine and I don't see that option. I tried deleting it in fdisk and it wants me to delete the logical dos drives first or something. When I go to delete them it says they haven't been defined or some other such. I can't figure out how to change it.

start the installation again and go to expert mode. (or choose recommended, but chose "custom" when it asks for partitions). you will see the options there.

Remember, keep it simple. Make a 512mb swap partition (/swap) and then the rest a root (/) partition.
 
I'll try Marty. Had a little incident though. I did a search for Partition Magic for a free trial. I have a trial of it and disk clone or something or other somewhere and I noticed a warez site came up so I clicked it just to look at the pretty pop ups, you understand. It took an effort to close them all before they could open again and penicillin tells me I got a sandovaa worm or something. You can't quaranteen it or delete it rename it get it in dos or nothing. Seems Windows ME won't let you touch _RESTORE. I finally figured out you go to system, properties, file system, troubleshooting, and check disable system restore, apply, uncheck it, apply. You loose all your check points, but hey. Boy was that a pain and I was just looking. Honest, I have never downloaded from a w site, ever. It reminds me of bombing Iraq cause they might be thinking bad thoughts.
 
Well I finally got some sort of situation where I could fit my selections of packages in, but as soon as the install started I got an 'there was an error installinggkibc-2.2.5-16mdk.i586 and if you say yes to proceeding there are an endless chain of these errors. I noticed that when you put the cd in the drive with windows running you get a screne that has the option to install and if you click it nothing happens. I'm wondering is I burned the disk wrong. I didn't see a check sum deali like in red hat and I wouldn't know how to yse it if I did. So there you are. It's hopeless. You wind up with 4.7 gigs for windows instead of 9. My partitions looked like a fat red a skinny green a fat red a skinny green and a skinny red. Oh well.
 
I hear the latest variant of ManDrake is good. I'am going to make the jump to ManDrake mabe on the next release.

Linux will be first on that list.

Dang, I created a bootable CD with Linux on it. Was it Knoppix? Anyway I figured that I didn't want to screw up my hard drive, and this was the safest route to go. Booted nicely, looked at it, and asked myself what would I do with it. Not finding a good answer, I filed it somewhere. Aside from being a learning opportunity, I cannot see the advantage of it over Windows for some ignorant SOB like me.

So many seem to like it, but I was wondering, besides being free, what can it do better than XP?
