Have you started your 2008 taxes yet?

I guess I'll probably use TaxACT again for 2008. Next year I need to keep much better tax records starting January 1st. I'm at the point of my life where taxes are finally getting a bit tricky.

I can't wait to see some obscure change in the Tax Code that penalizes everyone for the stimulus payment you received last year. It's bound to happen.

You can still start adding up deductions which have been taking place all year long.

I have school, medical, work related deductions. I wish I had been tracking them better all year because going back and doing it now might cause me grief.

Also, you can start piecing together capital gains/losses.

We have people for that. They know what I can and cannot claim. Like a pair of $130 boots, complete write-off because I wanted them. Who knew?

I'm waiting. By doing so I will be prepping my taxes in the middle of my Federal Taxation (Tax Accounting) course.

I think 99.8% of the people out there wait until at least late January/early February if not April 14th. OP must be a bit of an overachiever.

Yes, I have a lot of part-time/temporary jobs and it takes a lot of organization to do my taxes. I'm not naturally organized but this is an expensive disaster if I wait until the last minute.

Besides, if they end up owing me money, which often happens, I want that money as fast as I can get it.

Haha, I'm not an overachiever in the least. I just really like money.

I start an envelope at the beginning of the year that I throw everything in I'll need to for my taxes. Anything that is supposed to go somewhere else will get filed after I get done doing them.

Right now there isn't much in there but all my donation receipts and photos on CDs, real-estate tax statements, receipts from a couple of stock deals, car registration receipts, and the receipt for tinting my house's windows (if they let me deduct that).

Most people I know just finished their 2007 taxes month ago.

Why so long? Did they have a ton of captial gains/losses that had to be accounted for?

Or were they investing in hedge funds? I hear those can take a very long time to mail you the official paperwork necessary to do your taxes, as legally you are investing in a business and not a fund.

They owe me money, I'm filing as soon as I get my W-2s.

As much as I have in the past several years. With zero taxable income, I don't have to file...of course, I don't get to write off mortgage interest or other credits either.

I wait until I get all the W-2s and everything else, usually in February or so. Usually use the online version of Turbotax.

Quicken is always on the job, I just have to input the receipts and invoices.
