You can still start adding up deductions which have been taking place all year long.

I have school, medical, work related deductions. I wish I had been tracking them better all year because going back and doing it now might cause me grief.

Also, you can start piecing together capital gains/losses.

I'll just keep copying/pasting the same response.

There's nothing wrong with doing your pre-tax calculations now. Most people have at least a ball-park estimate of how much they'll earn through the end of the year, how much they'll pay in via withholding, what their deductible expenses will be, and their expected tax liablilty. Planning now may give you time to make some tax-deductible donations, pay some extra deductible bills, etc. Planning early also gives you time to put extra cash aside if you expect to have to pay over the amount you've had withheld.
If all you have is basic w-2 wages/salaries, your withholding, and standard deductions, and expect a refund, then just wait till you get the w-2's

Plus, if you do some calcs now and see you're getting a refund, you can reduce your withholding for that last couple paychecks and get an early start on your refund. That's an even quicker way to get your money than filing at the earliest possible moment.
