I hadn't visited the site in a while and just checked it out. The last I remember, it had a casual, laid back, no-nonsense attitude. Mehdi (the founder) just seemed to be doing it as a hobby - the blog posts were straightforward and simple.

But now looks like he's made this his primary job/income source, and I can't say I like the direction it took, with all the marketing glitz and the commercial tone. Even the blog posts now sound glib and patronizing.

I can see the motivation behind it, and the routine is still amazing, but a little disappointed with the direction it's taken. What do you think?

I don't really care. Now what IS a pissoff is trying to register on the Starting Strength forums.

Looks the same to me. When I first heard about SL a few years ago I remember a really amateurish site that was a little more than a blog, but unless there's something I'm just not seeing, it's been the way it is now since probably about 2009. I kind of like the look. *shrug*

I like Mehdi's program but he is a bit of a shill and pretty self-important. Though he's done a good job growing his site and is good at what he does, so it's not all unmerited.

From the sounds of his emails he earns a living as a personal coach/consultant of sorts and through finder's fees/commissions from sales made through his site.

It has become a lot more commercial since my first visits about 3 years ago, but doesn't bother me much.

I have followed the site for awhile and agree with the OP. He has started to pimp some programs that seem to gimmicky and are very different from the basics he originally preached. I think the money is starting to get to him.

IMHO the original strong lifts 5x5 report is the best basis for this program.

What routine would you recommend for someone who is trying to get back? I am planning to get a barbell and some weights and go with Rippetoe. Good idea? 5'8 130 pounds need to gain strength and lose the love handles.

Joining a gym with barbells is probably going to be easier than buying your own. You need to check out the stronglifts 5x5 beginners workout/starting strength.
