Man on Fire is based on a true story in Italy. The body guard was an ex-marine, the little girl actually got kidnapped and killed, and then he goes full out crazy.

Dunno why they changed it to Latin America, but "Man on Fire" is an Italian saying for someone who goes ballistic out for revenge.
