i got fired for giving away $0.25 of nacho cheese to a coworker for free.

explain more please.

I used to work at a movie theater and they would sell those small cups of extra nacho cheese for people who wanted more. Coworker was on his break and wanted some more cheese, gave him a cup of it for free. Never the less the manager thought i was giving away like $20 bucks of free food and came to realize it was only nacho cheese.

Do workers get free food? If not, then its theft ... and that's something people usually get fired for no matter where you work and what you do.

you did right to ask for respect. That's bullshit handling. That kind of behavior shouldn't even be at a fast food joint, that's just disrespectful. You take it up personally by calling the person back to the office. Don't make an ass of the employee with all the others watching.

I got fired from an internship because I mis-filed a document. Coincidentally I won the office Fantasy Football pool that year and was fired the same day. It was the first year I played FF and I never changed anything.

I worked with a woman who was given a list of "special projects" to complete and told to not worry about doing her normal job... a week later they fired her for not doing her normal job.

it's 25 cents worth of fucking cheese.

This time it was. 4 of those is $1 and usually this escalates to higher value items.

If it was just '25 cents' then it shouldn't have been a problem to slap a freaking quarter on the table.

My buddy worked at Home Depot through high school and got fired in his freshman year of college because someone said he was going to set the building on fire.

I have known people to get fired over menial tasks, but it was alway because they repeatedly failed to do them. Even the small things can eventually muck up the whole business if the person who's supposed to be doing them simply isn't doing them.

Even when I had jobs that consisted of nothing but menial labor I never ran into any problems because I did what they were paying me to do. I never understood the people who couldn't do that. These people usually say stuff like, "It's just a job, man", "Don't sweat it", but they're always the ones busting their ass at the end of the day trying to catch up with a mountain of work after receiving a major reaming from the boss. So who was really sweating it then? I was the one who was never worried because even though I needed the check every bit as much as they did I DID MY JOB, while they didn't do theirs.

So OP, why aren't you doing what you're getting paid to do?

That was my feeling. The guy was a tool, and only had his job because he knew higher ups. And thats the same connection that got me fired. Funny because the guy eventually got demoted because my other coworkers thought the situation was BS too, and people started to file complaints against the guy. It came out that he already got the company sued once for similar behavior. He was eventually demoted. Now my friend whom I got a job there as well, and was threated by the same guy because he was my friend, is now up for his job.

I told them i'll give them the quarter and they said i could not do that. So not much i could do after that.

I got let go from my law clerk position because the Bar results were coming out in three days, my boss knew I was going to pass and he did not want to have to keep me on as a lawyer (and pay me like one).

BTW, I was getting married 11 days later (my boss had been invited but never RSVP'd and, thank goodness, did not show up).

somehow reading all this made me feel better. i used to work at fedex. i had perfect attendance. never missed one day, never called in 'sick', never got there late (shift started at 4am) and had 99% scanning accuracy every day.

one day as a joke i put the letters 'ass' in the scanner instead of my initials. the next day when the report came in one of the supervisors stormed into the truck i was in and started yelling at me. i had absolutely no idea what was going on until she yelled something about those initials. i was fired right there in the middle of the shift. they claimed it was harassment of all things

its pretty laughable when they fire their best worker over something so ridiculous. that place had a HUGE turnover rate and horrible working conditions. usually had one new worker a week. it was really their loss. i seriously considered filing a lawsuit over the whole thing

Sorry, but the workplace is not a good place for practical jokes and other expressions of humor. Most bosses (especially lower to middle management) do not appreciate such things.

What do you think you would have sued for?

one of my friends was written up for being ~5 minutes late twice in a week.

personally, if I'm ~5 minutes late, I consider myself to be early :p

if you live in an at-will state, you'd pretty much be SOL... short of specifically violating laws (ie: discrimination against minorities, handicapped), you can get fired or quit for any or no reason.

Who says they have to have a justified reason, or any reason, for firing you? As long as it was not discriminatory, I am not sure what you could sue for.

I'd fire you too. And repoir isn't a word. So I'd probably fire you for that too if you were sending clients emails and trying to sound smart but coming off like an idiot and stuff. I mean come on. You said "and stuff" or something like that. I'd get rid of you too if you didn't act professionally in al communications.
