Have you guys seen this "dreadlocks girl" from SanFran U?

Which is not unique to India, etc... anyone can walk around, and not bathe, and have their hair get all matted and shit.

Which culture did dreadlock girl get it from? Ancient India or Carl from down the block?
And what culture does the person this nutter is yelling at intend to affiliate with?

It's somewhere between anti-american and racist to say any culture is 'off limits' for affiliation with because of that person's race.

Walking around with dreadlocks is like walking around in blackface
Black face would be de-humanizing to a group; much like the 'redskins' football team. Dreadlocks are an attempt to affiliate with a group. Who are you to tell this young man he can't be a Rastafarian?
, if you're completely ignorant of American history, can seem like an innocent gesture too.
I missed the part of in history class where dreadlocks were worn by white people to de-humanize blacks.
You're free to appropriate whatever hairstyle you want, but be aware that some people have had different experiences in life and may not take kindly to it.
That's true of anything. I don't take kindly to people who drive giant SUVs to commute to their office job.

On a scale from Rational person to Trump supporter, you've just reached "A Sanders administration would be worse than a Clinton administration for black people" levels of silly.

Not being American, I must apologize unreservedly to you Americans for appropriating your culture.

I have eaten hamburgers. I have eaten pizza (the American kind). I have even eaten Krispy Kreme donuts.

I wear Levi's jeans. I listen to American music. I watch American movies.

Clearly these are all terrible insults to the American people. I meant no offense. I had no idea how offensive it was to adopt another culture's ideas, practices, cuisine, style or appearance as my own.

Not being american you probably don't understand that while it may be acceptable for some in the elite class to use certain ethnic styles if others, in the culture being appropriated, use those same styles they are profiled, not given a job and shunned by society (told they look like shit). Not being american you probably don't understand the systemic issues some of us have to deal with.

No I completely don't understand.

I also didn't know yoga was offensive because it is also cultural appropriation. I am still unsure which oppressed class yoga is appropriated from - perhaps you could enlighten me?

I hope no American consumes Maple syrup. Canadians are frequently the butt of many jokes because of how polite and nice they are. I feel that consuming maple syrup is an example of cultural appropriation.

Gosh, dont you know that is the wrong type of cultural appropriation?

I think it only applies to those who wear tooks and muk luks while eating maple syrup eh.

"Cultural appropriation"

That is some serious First World bullshit right there.

Who even has time to dream up all this crap, let alone get all crazy over it?

Ethnicity ≠ Race

Race ≠ Culture

Ethnicity = Culture

Since ethnicity really has no racial boundaries (I.E., black and white people can all be equally ethnic hispanic) people have no right to claim that black people specifically, based on skin color, have unique cultural boundaries.

Cultural appropriation is often misappropriated (Ugh) as one race stealing things from another race. To assume you can steal anything from a race is, simply, incorrect.

I've tried to explain the issue but people here refuse to see. I'll try again with a simple sentence.

Some people are angry that when they wear their cultural identity it has a negative effect on their inclusion in the broader culture but when those same cultural identities are used by people in power they don't face those same stereotypes.

Does this make sense? Or are we going to keep brining up things like yoga as if we understand the issue?

The video is fake.

Who are you to tell this young man he can't be a Rastafarian?

Not me, that's the job of a Rastafarian. But wearing dreads doesn't make you Rastafarian.

I missed the part of in history class where dreadlocks were worn by white people to de-humanize blacks.

Perennially, we see calls to establish the right not to be offended. This is another one of these calls, just with a new guise. As always, crybabies need to put on their grownup chonies and get on with their own lives instead of trying to dictate what other people are wearing/saying/doing.

People can go pound sand if they don't like what someone else is wearing. As long as not vulgar in an area where kids are. I would have told them "go fuck yourself", and have. Liking it to Blackface is idiotic.

1) Rastafarians don't have a race restriction. So no, it's not their job.

You said: "Who are you to tell this young man he can't be a Rastafarian?" I personally don't give a damn who isn't and isn't a Rasta. If you're assuming he is just because he has dreads then that's a pretty weak argument.

Race is irrelevant. I would imagine the founders of Rastafarianism have a pretty strong grasp on who is and isn't allowed to be one.

2) As disturbing as those images are, I see no use of dreadlocks by white people to de-humanize blacks.

See: Blackface, Buckwheat (Little Rascals), Stepin Fetchit, etc.

The issue is with imitating the physical features of a black person, not stealing someone's style of fashion.

You do know that at one point blackface was also normalized?

Good god. Just stop.

It's so simpleminded to compare dreadlocks to blackface that just calling that idiotic and stupid are actually being KIND.

Nitwits making such a braindead comparison... just shut up already. You're embarrassing yourselves and are just way too simple-minded to even know it.

Newsflash nitwit.... THIS:

Long-Hairstyles-for-Black-Women-17.jpg

Isn't her natural look any more than dreadlocks would be you simpleton.

I'd wager black women striaighten their hair more frequently than white people wear dreadlocks. Neither is racially insensitive....eh you know what, nevermind I can already picture you mouth-breathing unable to figure out a single word that's said.

Either jstorm is intellectually challenged or he's just a troll. I can't believe anyone with half a brain actually sees a parallel there.

You found someone in dressed like a Rasta for Halloween: that hardly brings dreadlocks anywhere near the historic de-humanization of blackface.

Not that I'm agreeing that it was normalized. You do know that not everything is as it once was right? In today's world, comparing wearing dreads to Blackface is idiotic. Especially considering dreads isn't a black person exclusive, or origination.
