That sounds like a personal problem, then. Just state that up front, instead of making stuff up about the deficiencies of the Chromecast.

Most popular media apps, even quite a few that rely on local storage, can cast. And if you REALLY wanted to, you could just cast your screen.

I just cast my phone or device completely to chromecast. Poweramp or any app actually gets cast to it.
 
When Chromecasts first came out, you could only cast using Google Music or YouTube. It may have changed now, I don't know and I don't care.

The other reason I don't use one is because I don't want my phone being the media provider for my entertainment system - I have much bigger iron (only a Xeon, but compared to a phone might as well be big iron) for that.

It would appear that you really have no clue how any of it actually works then, and the options available for casting. I have a standalone chromecast, and one of my sets has chromecast built in. I watch nearly everything through casting from either my phone, the tablet my tv came with, my wife's icrap, a notebook, or any of the 4 other computers currently setup.

Your phone works as normal. Almost everything immediately offloads to the chromecast, and the chromecast handles the data fetching duties. Your phone/device just tells the chromecast what to do. You can even shut your phone off after it starts casting and it'll just continue on. If it reaches the end of a playlist it'll just revert to the home screen and await instructions. Netflix will just keep playing until you get a "are you there?" request.

Main except of course would be if you're casting a locally stored file from your device to the chromecast.

It sounds like that would be mirroring. In which case, the Chromecast turns your TV into a big phone display.
