Well maybe *you* can't, but BubbleUPnP works great with a Chromecast target.(I can't even cast my music unless I use Google Turd Music)

Chromecasts are not stand alone boxes. Even if I got them for free, I wouldn't use them (I can't even cast my music unless I use Google Turd Music).
I use PowerAMP exclusively.I have no issues casting spotify music to them.
I just cast my phone or device completely to chromecast. Poweramp or any app actually gets cast to it.Chromecasts are not stand alone boxes. Even if I got them for free, I wouldn't use them (I can't even cast my music unless I use Google Turd Music).
When Chromecasts first came out, you could only cast using Google Music or YouTube. It may have changed now, I don't know and I don't care.
The other reason I don't use one is because I don't want my phone being the media provider for my entertainment system - I have much bigger iron (only a Xeon, but compared to a phone might as well be big iron) for that.

What happens if someone phones you?
(I'm thinking of getting a 'cast just because Google play music doesn't work on the fire TV)
Your phone works as normal. Almost everything immediately offloads to the chromecast, and the chromecast handles the data fetching duties. Your phone/device just tells the chromecast what to do. You can even shut your phone off after it starts casting and it'll just continue on. If it reaches the end of a playlist it'll just revert to the home screen and await instructions. Netflix will just keep playing until you get a "are you there?" request.
Main except of course would be if you're casting a locally stored file from your device to the chromecast.
