I responded:

That's all. I don't think Dr. Offit is right or wrong, as I've not read anything more about it.

edit: however, I'm not sure how much I like this:

Beginning of article:

End of article:

Focusing on the most vulnerable (most likely to benefit) IS like the way we do influenza, lol.
Dr. Offit isn't wrong, but even he's admitted that his recommendations tend to encourage the vaccine skeptics or anti-vaxxers.

The Atlantic - The One Thing Everyone Should Know About Fall COVID Vaccines

Offit hasn’t changed his mind on who most needs these new COVID vaccines. But he is rethinking how he talks about it: “I will stop putting myself in a position where I’m going to be misinterpreted,” he told me.

Public health policy isn't just about "being right." It's about applying the science to achieve the desired health outcomes. FWIW the vaxx rate for last year's bivalent booster was abysmal (about 20%); I never got it but I'm pretty anti-social. A recent poll suggested interest is much better this year but also revealed a stark partisan divide: 79% of Democratic voters plan to get the Covid shot; vs 39% of Republican voters.

Walgreens and CVS accepting appointments for updated COVID vaccine. Just scheduled mine along with a flu shot.
CVS told me yesterday they are charging about $56. I think my HMO will do it free, so I figure to wait. My doctor messaged me today saying they should have it by late Sept. or early Oct. Online, they say early Oct. When available I'll get the flu shot at the same time. Doc said the RSV won't be available until late Nov. or Dec.

Me too. I had the series two years ago and each one was no different than the flu shot for me.
I had virtually no reaction to the Shingrix vaccinations. All 6 of my Moderna shots didn't much move the needle in terms of discomfort of any kind. Haven't been infected by covid AFAIK. But I do wear an N95 if I get at all nervous, and it doesn't take a lot to make me nervous. I was indoors with a crowd of ~20 YO kids yesterday and I went for my mask.

It's so subjective. I barely noticed the shingles series. I just had them.
Same here. Shingles is nothing anyone wants to go through contracting. There are horror stories out there. In other news, I'm apparently immortal. Spent some time with a female friend who told me the next day she had covid. Not only wasn't I infected, but I've had zero side effects from any of my vaccine shots -- the entire covid series including the latest yesterday, flu shots, pneumonia shot, the shingles series. Fear me, I'm Ironman! ;)

Also . . . early on in the pandemic I took it upon myself to do the food shopping for several fearful female friends. Despite being out there with the unvaxed and the careless, I remained unscathed. I'm thinking of applying for sainthood. :p

I managed to go without getting covid till last year summer. I was vaxed.

My wife had to travel to see her sick mom but took precautions. She needed an antigen test to get on planes so she was clean.

However she got COVID either on the plane back or when they were instructed to take off masks at passport control.

She gave it to me and it still sucks.. A whole year after.. I still get fatigued easily and she's had the worst allergies and itching ever since she got covid.

Nothing has worked for her.. no anti-inflammation drug, no anti-histamine, no cream, no moisturizer, no steroid.. had to take her to ER a few times just due to that.

After all that we tried Homeopathy and it is working slow but her itching and allergies are controlled and down to 20% or so and using Cerave as a moisturizer.

Covid is seriously becoming like HIV in a way.. it won't kill you but it will weaken your body to a point where other things can easily kill you. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE COVID.

Planning on getting vax either next week or early Oct.

Family just got COVID & Flu vaccine’s yesterday. Wife and I going to Europe today for our anniversary. Going to get to feel crappy for the flight over there. Hopefully we’ll have decent immunities for the flight back.
Congrats man, and good luck. How many years?

^^^ THIS. Despite my crowing about remaining unscathed so far, I do not in any way minimize the threat of getting covid (seems like a sooner or later thing, long term) nor the hideous downside of long term covid.

This comparison is pretty extreme, and bordering on absurd and offensive. Everyone that gets HIV and remains untreated will almost certainly develop AIDS, which you may as well say is fatal (it's a stupid semantics game to claim that it is other stuff that kills people with AIDS); whereas only a fraction of people that contract COVID-19 will have long COVID symptoms (loosely defined as symptoms lasting >4 weeks).

It's fine to just note that COVID-19 can have serious effects on yourself and loved ones, so just get the vaccine to reduce your risk of serious illness or death.

While I do see your viewpoint.. sadly it's more than just a fraction.

Estimates are 6-7% of the population.

If only 40% of the US had covid.. (population 340 mil) and 7% of those had long covid.. that number of long covid sufferers would be 10 million.

It's bigger than you think..

Yes, it can be a fair amount of people that take longer to recover or have long term symptoms. The question that is still being studied for long COVID is what percent just take longer to recover vs what percent remain with long term issues, and then what are the other factors that come into play (eg, vaccination status, use of paxlovid or other therapy). It does not warrant an HIV comparison.

You are truly something, obviously. I can't say I had no reaction. Moderna #1, had sore arm for a couple days (difficulty raising arm above head). Moderna #2, less arm soreness definitely, a mild fever for a day at most, but didn't feel sick. Subsequent Moderna shots (3-6) even less reactions. Shingrix? Can't remember either shot bothering me, maybe a bit of arm soreness. Don't remember ever having a "bad reaction" to a vaccination, i.e. one that made me regret getting the shot in the least.

Ha ha, yeah, with the covid shots I was actually worried I never had a reaction, since they were saying most of the reaction was from your immune system doing its job.

Noted! I was glad to get a reaction from the covid-19 vaccinations, some kind of confirmation that the shot I got wasn't from a bad batch!

I wonder if you are immune to covid-19. Just an idea, maybe silly.

Vaccine reaction is not indicative of how effective it is/was. Simply related to an individual's specific immune system.

I felt slightly under the weather the next day.
Then nothing.

Month after the second shot, Delta entered the house. Slight fever for one night.
So... minimal reactions still do work fine at providing a robust immune response. I mean, the Vaccine practically made me immune to Delta. I remain ever thankful for that.

6-7% is indeed a fraction: about 1 in 16. You may recall that approx. 2 years ago, the fear over long Covid was even greater. Some estimates of incidence were in the 20%ish range IIRC.

@Brainonska511 didn't say long Covid doesn't affect a lot of people in meaningful ways. He's saying your comparison to HIV was ridiculous.

I'm probably gonna schedule the flu and Covid vaccine for Friday after work. It's gonna rain all weekend so I might as well spend it watching TV (if I get any side effects).

Just scheduled my flu shot, they don't have the updated Covid one there yet, so I'll have to check back later.

Did sportage's whack job MAGA relatives kidnap him and close his account? My bad if I missed the discussion and or drama. On topic: yes, of course I am vaccinated.
