the hard drive led for activity... nor do they have one for the burner/cdrom

I never did understand this... I hate it also...

I'm fixing an overpriced mac at the moment and I want to see some form of blinking lights... I love to watch the hard drive lights blink.. but nope, apple doesn't include them...

urgh.

Because they're useless? My PC sits off to the side of my desk where Ican't see it and I certainly dont stick my head around there occasioanlly jsut to see if the HD light is flashing.

Since my IBM 75GXP is so quiet, I like being able to see the HDD light.

Besides, I replaced the normal red LED with a blue one, so it looks cool. ;)

For OS9 I had a programm that had an HDD icon flash next to the clock during drive access. Don't know about doing that on OS-X

I can't always tell when my hard drives or cd roms are being accessed... I've got so many fans...

Fortunately for macintosh the seagate hard drives they use in their G4 tower units are so damn loud you can hear them over the 120 mm fan...

No, it's just that you can basically use any mouse you want on the Mac; 1 button is just there for simplicity. Go plug in an Intellimouse Explorer if you want some buttons, you don't have to use the included mouse.

Replace 'simplicity' with 'stupidity' and you hit the nail on the head.

I dislike that too actually but of course you can replace the mouse.

Exactly. The intellimouse Explorer even has a little MacOS icon on the box.

Just curious, but do most mac apps support the right-mouse button or would it be useless (I imagine with the mentioned intellimouse explorer that the fwd/back buttons would work fine in IE6, but any other apps like the file explorer (whatever it's called))?

I sure the heck use the hdd light... if my computer is slowing to a crawl, i quick peek will tell me if it's my hdd thrashing or my videocard/cpu.

And the cd-rom light is good to know if it's being access or not.

In 10.2.x (Jaguar), right-clicking works on almost every application... as does the scroll wheel.

I wish Apple would just ship their computers with multiple button mice now, just so people get over the 1 button mouse crap...

Yeah, but on a Mac laptop you are stuck with one button on their touchpad mouse. And plugging a mouse into a laptop sucks.

One reason I would never buy a Mac notebook.

You should have realized by now that notfred will come out with a sarcastic, cynical, or just plain scathing comment whenever possible. It's his way.

i have yet to run into a problem with a one button touchpad. Does holding down the button for 2 seconds really effect you negatively or are you looking for something to complain about?

Me too. My WD1200JB is extremely quiet. Sometimes I like to make sure it is actually accessing the drive.

i can't stand not having the led because if the computer is caught up with doing something i'd like to know if it's some software using up cpu or hd paging.

Interesting, I've had my Mac for over a month now and never noticed the absence of the HDD activity light. As for the one button mouse - it sucks. But I've gotten used to <ctrl>-click and as was mentioned, one can easily just plug in an Intellimouse Explorer.
